if ITV are still going ahead with their ridiculous decision to put the predictably dull Italy Bulgaria on ITV1 and open and exciting Denmark Sweden on ITV2 tonight?

 

Normally I wouldn't be too bothered as I could just use freeview, but technology seems to have stopped at Southampton and my parents can't get ITV2 on the Isle of Wight.

Something that's confusing me.

 

Surely if Italy were to win 10-0 they would go above Denmark, regardless of how many goals they score whilst drawing. Or does goal difference not count? <img src="/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Performace between the teams counts first.

 

If Italy win 10-0, and Sweden and Denmark draw 2-2, they will all have 5 points.

 

So it goes into a mini-league table between the three teams.

 

And it would look like this...

 

...........W - D - L - F - A

Sweden 0 - 2 - 0 - 3-3

Denmk 0 - 2 - 0 - 2-2

Italy.... 0 - 2 - 0 - 1-1

 

ie. matches against Bulgaria wouldn't count.

 

So regardless of Italy's huge win tonight, they'd be bottom of the mini league table.

They did say on Five Live this morning that a 2-2 draw specifically would see both through whatever. And that was the BBC. So it must be true.

Group C situation explained

If Italy fail to beat Bulgaria, Denmark and Sweden will advance to the quarter-finals.

If Sweden do not lose to Denmark, Sweden will advance to the quarter-finals.

If Italy win their game against Bulgaria the winner of Denmark-Sweden will join Italy in the quarter-finals.

If Italy beat Bulgaria and Denmark-Sweden ends in 0-0 draw, Sweden and Italy will advance to the last eight.

If Italy beat Bulgaria by two goals and Denmark-Sweden ends in 1-1 draw, Italy will join Sweden in the knock-out stages. However if Italy beat Bulgaria by just one goal and Denmark-Sweden ends in a 1-1 draw, Denmark will join Sweden in the quarter-finals.

If Italy beat Bulgaria and Denmark-Sweden ends in 2-2 draw, Sweden and Denmark will advance to the quarter-finals.

 

In the event of a tie, Uefa criteria will be used to separate the teams.

Like Venables said, it is very difficult to engineer a 2-2 draw, but have a close look at the second Swedish goal and you'll see the Danish keeper Sorenson 'spilling' the ball to the Swedish player - interesting <img src="/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Mind you, I put it on Monday morning, and that may have been before Labrokes started the trend of slashing the odds.

 

See the odds are out for Conference South on bet365 now. Quite different to the Sky Sports odds, and we are 40/1, and a lot higher up the list.

Nice one, I've gone for the Czech's tonight. I realise they don't have a lot to play for, but they've changed the team quite a bit and have a number of players trying to win quarter final places. As opposed to Germany who are just poor.

 

Combined it with Ivo Karlovic in the tennis. He easily beat the 13th seed on Monday and is playing some relative unknown today.

 

The Czech's are 3-1 and Karlovic is 4-9 giving about 5-1

 

(Perhaps I should apologise at this point to the Dutch, Latvians and Ivo Karlovic supporters?)
