Middlesex Athenian League

Recommended Posts

Nifty Nigel ....... You are talking a lot of sense here .. I told you all that PBT had started a true debate here and I am delighted at the ideas being promoted on this forum , they are certainly worth pursuing and I can only hope for the future of football at Step 5 we can take them forward between leagues and look back later and remember where you first saw them . I, for one will certainly do my bit to help the future of football progress... so long as the F A are just as positive in their actions.

I have copied below my ideas on what the South East region could look like, based on last season's finishing positions.

The Isthmian Two would be scrapped. Although the Kent League and Sussex County League would have a League above them, my structure would actually preserve them.

I had renamed the Essex Senior League the East London League, but why change a name for the sake of it.

For planning purposes, I also called the Middlesex Premier or Athenian West the SML (West London), but I actually like keeping the names Essex Senior, Athenian and Middlesex....

Obviously, there are one or two clubs, that may have not made promotion this year, like Purton in Hellenic, but their inclusion is just illustrative.

I have standardised on 22 club divisions. Given experiences of Combined Counties and Isthmian League, 24 club divisions in Non League football is too big with all the cup competitions, although the Midland Alliance managed quite well. The Football League does have a good case for it's excemption.

Points well made Nifty. However wouldn't the Kent A2/M2 and A20/M20 corridor teams find it easier/more preferable to come north via the Dartford Crossing rather than a cross country run to the West Sussex/Hants/Berkshire borders?

Whether you're talking either club or league the wider the geographic spread of the clubs involved the easier it would be to attract sponsors I would think.

We could be speaking about the greater part of South East England after all!

The one I posted above was my first attempt, but I found I had actually forgot some of the South Midlands clubs, which I wasn't intending to put in the Athenian Middlesex / Essex areas.

There aren't enough clubs in southern Essex to have an exclusive Essex only division of 22 clubs or enough current Step Five clubs to have an exclusive Middlesex league or division. This also applies to southern Hertfordshire, who are within a few miles of the Middlesex and Essex borders, so in my opinion, they would be better off in the Athenian area than going to places like Milton Keynes and Biggleswade or further.

My second stab at two divisions is posted below....

Nifty a true Essex League, like Mr Chairman picked up on earlier in the thread to include Mid - North Essex clubs too. These could replace Ware, Broxbourne, Hertford and the two Enfields.

To make a true Essex League.

(Essex Ridgeons League teams.)

Tiptree

Clacton

Stanway

Harwich

Halstead

won't include Maldon as they are now in Dr Martens from next season.

I do agree, that in an ideal world all the Essex clubs, at Step Five (and Six) should be in the Essex Senior League, but there are three issues driving against this....

1). Some clubs choose to play in the Eastern Counties League, for various reasons.

2). The geography of the county means that some clubs to the north of the county are actually better off in travelling terms in the ECL.

3). There are clubs at Steps Five and Six in the ECL.

It was for the reasons stated above and for clubs in the reverse situation, that I chose the constitutions that I did. If you consider Essex only teams in the ESL, where would you send Sawbridgeworth Town to? They want to be members of the ESL and I think it's better to have people and clubs who want to be there than force clubs against their will, Saffron Walden Town being a good example and even Maldon Town, when they chose to join the ECL.

The alternative to this would be a tie up between the Essex Senior League and Eastern Counties League, but that's likely to spell the end of the ESL and none of us want that!
