Decision made on Telford

From FA website:

The FA have announced today that AFC Telford United will start in the Unibond northern division one.

The placement is a drop of 3 divisions from the Conference.

What does everybody think... I would maybe have expected them to start a bit lower down but apparently a drop of three leagues is the 'norm'.

To my understanding, none of the bottom three in the conference this season got relegated. Farnborough stayed up because Margate's ground isen't good enough, Leigh RMI stayed up because the champions of the southern league didn't have a good enough ground and Norwich Vic. stayed up because of this whole Telford fiasco.

As is my understanding anyway...

Does anyone know weather this has ever happened in any other league at all?

Nathan's right about the Conference. All three teams finishing in the bottom three were reprieved because of what's happened to Margate, the situation in the Northern league where no team qualified for promotion, and now Telford folding.

My personal view on the whole situation is that AFC Telford should, without question, have started at the lowest possible league, like Wimbledon, Aldershot and Maidstone did. On their forum there are arguments both ways, with some arguing that since it is a drop of 3 levels, it's comparable to where AFC Wimbledon started. However others (outsiders) argue that the FA have favoured Telford because they play at a nice ground.

As for the knock-on effects Mark, I have no idea, but there's bound to be repurcussions and re-jigging. I know that Ashton Utd have moved into Conference North and with AFC Telford joining the Unibond northern div one, my understanding is that one team will move up a level to clear a space for them. Quite controversial, just ask any fan of Newcastle Town who appear to be particularly peeved. If I were you I'd keep my eyes on another's site as he always seems to know the score.

i'm sure that if this had been Woking or Farnbrough they would have ended at the same level as Aldershot did. The FA is run by a bunch of Northern W*****s with one rule for the North & one for the South.

I think AFC Wimbledon started pretty much as low down as they could feasibly go. The Combined Counties League was equivalent to Ryman Div 2 at the time. There was a Combined Counties Div 1 I think, but I would imagine the standard of football and stadia would be pretty much equivalent to park football. Also I think the fact that they would bring over a thousand fans to each game meant that they were put in a league where the venues could cope.

But I see your point, new clubs should be put in leagues where there is no relegation and promotion is pretty much decided by winning the league and being voted into a higher league - i.e, the very bottom of the pyramid.

By the way, I know Wimbledon didn't fold and reform - I meant to say AFC Wimbledon, not Wimbledon, in my second post.

What is the significance, if any, of 'AFC'?

I can understand that a name change would be a legal requirement if a club folded and reformed (as for Telford Utd/AFC Telford Utd), but is there more to the 'AFC' indication than that?

I agree they should be lower. When Aldershot went bust they had to start at what was then Ryman Division Three. That was a drop of at least four divisions (I am not sure how the pyramid was back then). I am also not sure what is below Unibond Division One. I know that there is a Ryman Divsion, so presumably the same and that is where they should be.

I can think of three reasons for the AFC:

1) As PJ says, legal requirement as Telford are in liquidation

2) As per Matt

3) A trend. AFC Wimbledon have been a big success so copy them as much as possible.

Very true, just like they could have been called 'Sudbury United'. There's many examples of teams that have merged to become 'United', one close to home is Maidenhead. Regarding Telford, Martin's point above about them being called 'AFC Telford United' is a good one; they were probably influenced by AFC Wimbledon's success story, and I'd guess they'll be taking a lot of advice from them. I think they wanted to retain the 'Telford United' part so adding a simple 'AFC' is the easiest way of going about it.

Update - AFC Telford United have been told by the FA that they CAN compete in the FA Cup and FA Trophy next season, despite being a new club. The reason given is that they will take the place of the defunct Telford United.

I was always of the understanding that new clubs (e.g AFC Wimbledon) had to wait one season before they could enter the FA Vase/FA Trophy and two seasons until they could enter the FA Cup (I think... could be one season for both). Fair or unfair? Discuss.

The decission to let "AFC" Telford into the Unibond First has upset a few people here in shropshire. by that I am not talking about fans of former rivals Shrewsbury Town I mean the local leagues and clubs.

The Leagues have spent a lot of time and effort organising pyramid agreements with leagues above and below them only to see that FA in Soho Square disregard the agreement by letting a new club jump the system completly.

As for the clubs it is mainly the ones who have been prevented from jumping the system in the first place who are annoyed.

It seems that if you have a shiny grond you can get away with murder.
