ALDERSHOT Town’s decision to revert to full-time status has claimed another victim — popular defender Dominic Sterling, writes REBEKAH WHELLER.

Sterling follows Jason Chewins, John Nutter and Lee Charles out of the Recreation Ground this week as boss Terry Brown plans to piece together a younger squad to push for promotion back to the Football League.

Speaking on Wednesday, Sterling, 27, admitted his reluctance to leave his well-paid job in the Civil Service but said that he would make the move to full-time football if the management could be “flexible” with his needs.

However, it seems that there is no place in the side for part-timers and a move to big-money Conference South side Hornchurch may now be on the cards for Sterling.

Brown said: “We are moving into a different era that requires younger players who are hungry and want to be professional footballers. It’s impossible for us to make up the wages that a senior non-league player can earn at a football club, and the wages from their jobs, the club can’t pay the two wages.”

For Brown, the task of building up a back four almost from scratch remains, however, he has confirmed that key defender and captain, Ray Warburton, will be staying at the Rec for another season.

“We are keeping Ray for another season, to be fair to Ray he played the most games for us this season, over 50. All the rest of my squad will be full-time but it’s more sensible for Ray to train part-time.

“If Ray trained every day, he wouldn’t be able to play on a Saturday so it’s just a case of being a bit sensible, I don’t want to get into some full-time, some part-time, they are all full-time players.

“The skipper’s role is always one between management and players and Warbs has fantastic experience, he’s being brought in to help the younger players develop,” said Brown.

Now the boss is looking at further players to strengthen the side, and along with “four or five others” Brown is focussing on, he is also waiting on the retained list of League players.

“There will be about 600 names on that list so I’m waiting to see who’s on that. I’ve had talks with four or five players and we’re looking for defenders, a couple of midfielders and a forward,” said Brown.

The boss still has two major question marks hanging over him as he has yet to acquire the signatures of Tim Sills and Nikki Bull. Striker Sills works as a marketing executive for the Tussauds Group while highly-rated goalkeeper Bull is involved in property development.

It has always been an ambition for Sills to play full-time football while Bull has always maintained his desire to re-enter League football.

“I’ll be speaking to Nikki on Tuesday, he probably comes into that section where hand on heart I’m not sure if we can pay him enough with his selling houses and things.

“I would like to keep him but there’s players that I want to keep that I won’t be able to keep and Tim is another one that has a very good job, but I’ll be speaking to him next week,” said Brown.
