All the political columnists in the weekend press used most of their columns to decry UKIP as 'One Big Joke'

 

If they are such a joke, why waste space on saying so ??

 

Hastings in The Snail got my support by saying 'All three major parties will tell you porkies to get the vote, then sell us out to the Euro's, so vote UKIP and make your point clear. If we have to be in Europe, then let it be on OUR terms - Not theirs.'

I'm sympathetic to your sentiments, FFUSA, but it's a tad unfair to say that the French "rolled over". I don't want to "go into one", but it's a prevailing view which needs clarification.

 

The German army was the mightiest and toughest military force at that time, and possibly in History. The Allies only defeated them because of sheer weight of military power.

 

Sure, there might have been the possibility of the French holding their lines further South...but this is unlikely as at the time the Allies' industrial military machine had not reached anything like the capacity that was needed to repel the invader.

 

France was also bordered by Italy and Spain...whose governments were sympathetic to the Germans. France faced the possibilty of war on three fronts. So it's hardly surprising that they sought the most favourable terms for an armistace.

 

The French and British were just not prepared for another war of attrition, as the previous war had been - and did not have the tactical imagination of the Germans to avoid it.

 

There were sections of the French establishment which held sympathies towards Hitler - but, as we know, there were "certain people" within the British aristocracy who held similar views. <img src="/images/graemlins/whistling.gif" alt="" />

 

As for the UKIP....every other European country is doing its utmost to have their interests represented in the best terms within the EU, and Britain should be no different.

The fact of the matter is most ordinary people feel as though the Big Three parties in this country are the ones doing the "rolling over".

Representative Democracy implies that all voices - no matter how extreme, wrong, politically correct, whatever - should have a platform.

Any votes cast away from the rich, Big Three parties is healthy for Representative Democracy itself.

I know very little about UKIP, but when new parties are formed, they often seem attractive at first, but turn out to be as bad or even worse than the established parties. Up to now, the EU has at least been successful in reducing conflicts within its own borders, but a healthy balance needs to be kept between demanding one's own interests and being ready to compromise on issues which are less important.

For God's sake, the war was 60 years ago, remember it and those who died but for chrissake get over it. Germany is not our enemy any more and it is offensive to keep going on about them trying to rule Europe again.

Interesting poll in the paper (Sexpress ?), yesterday showed that in one area, UKIP were ahead of Lib/Dem !
