Rugby Question, GHA/AFF

I hear Jonny Wilkinson is quitting rugby to play American Football in the States.

 

Does this happen often? Presumably the money is over there??

Very rarely. The last Englishman that I can recall 'making it' in the NFL was Mick Luckhurst [from St Albans] who was the kicker with the Allanta Falcons for about 9 or 10 seasons. He was at St Columbas school and was a very good all round athlete. He was awarded a scholarship at some U.S. University and was a draft pick by the Falcons. He retired about 7 or 8 years ago.

 

The money? Yessiree.

I think that there is, or used to be, some rule that a player could only play in the NFL if he had graduated from a U.S. University.

I read somewhere that Dwain Chambers is going to try his luck as a wide-receiver in the NFL after being banned from athletics, and a non-too successful attempt at cooking.

Clive Allen tried his luck with the Monarks (Alvin Bird, what a legend!!), but rumours such as Wilko to the Bucs or Chambers to anywhere that can take him are just the usual stupid rumours you get with sport.

BTW, Wilkinson wouldn't give up rugby for American Football, he loves the physical side to much to become nothing more than a kicker.
