"Rivaldo to join Bolton May 10 2004

 

Bolton last night claimed Brazilian star Rivaldo is ready to snub Celtic to sign for them.

 

Chairman Phil Gartside revealed he had received a fax from the World Cup winner stating he wants to move to the English Premiership side.

 

Bolton boss Sam Allardyce had given up on the Samba star, whose agent had indicated the player would prefer to join Celtic because they could offer him Champions League action.

 

But Gartside insisted Rivaldo had been back in contact and accepted the terms offered.

 

Gartside said: 'I have a fax in my pocket which arrived this morning saying he wants to come to us. It says he doesn't want to play in Scotland so we are still hoping to do something with him.

 

'We've offered him a deal which he's accepted financially and it's justa case of getting together with him to put pen to paper.'

 

Few Bolton fans will believe Rivaldo will join them until the deal is sealed but it finally appears Allardyce has pulled off the biggest coup of his managerial career, having already lured Youri Djorkaeff, Jay-Jay Okocha and Ivan Campo.

 

Rivaldo insists Bolton are his 'priority' although he conceded he was 'flattered' to be linked with Celtic.

 

He said: 'Playing for Celtic in the Champions League would be the closest I can get to the top level and I am taking their interest very seriously.

 

'Celtic have tried to sign me three times but Bolton are my priority and I don't want to use them to raise my price elsewhere.

 

'I'm flattered Celtic have shown interest, even though I have not spoken to anyone from them yet.

 

'To be considered someone who can replace Henrik Larsson is very motivating and makes me feel very important.

 

'I know he is a great player and has done great things for Celtic. But I'm Rivaldo. I am a different player.'"
