For those of you that have not been informed it is with great sadness that I break the news that Len Dewson passed away yesterday morning following a short illness.

Len was one of the life's gentleman and was deeply passionate about his football, in particular Billericay Town FC where he spent most of his time.

I'm sure you'll join me in sending our thoughts and best wishes to his family.

Perhaps something can be placed on the website as a mark of respect.

It won't seem the same at New Lodge without Len around. I for one owe him an awful lot, having known him since I was about 15, as it was Len who put me on the path to my radio career by inviting me to be the "matchday announcer" back in 1978. As I obviously didnt drive then, he would pick me up regular as clockwork from my mum's in his beige Ford Escort and always considered it unlucky if we drove over the Mountnessing Road bridge by the Pilgrim as a train passed underneath. I recall more than once we lost unexpectedly after this happened! I also used to have to make sure that his beloved Walsall were included in my half-time scores round up alongside the West Hams and the Arsenals of the time and in the early 80's I worked side by side with Len on the programme where I learnt the true meaning of the word "meticulous". Often I would be booked to do a disco in the club after a game and he would always be the last of the football side of the Club to leave, usually emerging from the boardroom or the upstairs photocopier half an hour after the party had started, clutching vital BTFC papers that simply could NOT be left till Sunday morning... There was little - no,NOTHING - that Len didn't know about the football world at our level and our club cannot possibly replace him. He will be genuinely, seriously missed.

I have known Len for 21 years, from when I was 18 years old playing in the reserves. He was a gentleman through and through who had Billericay Town running through his veins. He has always made me and my family feel very welcome when visiting the club and in recent times involved with the club. He will be sadly missed and our thoughts are with his Family at this sad time.

Crossy and Family.
