Wayne's in a world of his own - Enfield Gazette.

Recommended Posts

I'm sure Mr Gumble's article was intended to generate debate. However it does a great disservice to several loyal ETFC players not "named" as must haves in Team Gumble. By all means be controversial - but at least watch the majority of the games so you can justify your opinions.

I agree with Andy - let Jim Chandler get on with his job. He is the manager and his record speaks for itself. He will makes the changes that he feels are necessary during the off season. Players are loyal to him - a big part of establishing a successful team.

It doesnt matter which team u support, the game is all about opinions. Tell me that theres not 1 person out of 67,000 man utd fans that thinks keanes past his best. Tell me that every man in the street thinks that the best England XI plays every time. Waynes got an opinion, whether right or wrong. To finish 4th in the league would suggest he has at least got a fair enough point. no names mentioned but there are definately some players that are should not be playing for us next season.

Evening all - long time, no write. Let me pose a few questions and give some more of those opinions you love!

AndyETFC - are you really of the opinion that ETFC will flourish by keeping the same side next year (less John Ridout)? Are you advocating no changes at all? And you want the best for ETFC? Doesn't sound like it to me. As for pointing me out, I'd have had no problem with that - football is all about opinions and I accept yours but don't agree with it!

Bronob - Fair comments

Cleggy - I've heard many of your songs/chants and find them perfect for this weekends Eurovision Song Contest. Keep 'em coming!

Arkwright and bjr - It is true that I've missed more games than I would have liked to this year but the view expressed (if you read it) mentions discussions with a number of supporters - these are not necessarily my opinions but are the output of a talk the like of which can be heard in the bar after every home game.

I do the Gazette column because a board member recommended me to them - that same board member has mailed me a message of support this week and alerted me to this discussion. The club has ample opportunity to put across its official line, as a supporter, I may or may not agree with that view!

Southport - this weeks column was the last of the season as the season has now ended (in case you missed it). Yes, I was at the Presentation evening, was not hiding and would have been honoured to have present a prize. Just the same as you have a right to sing out of tune appalling songs behind the goal!

Finally, to quote Oscar Wilde, There's only one thing worse than than being talked about and that is not being talked about.

Cheers All!!

Who said I was of the opinion that there should not be changes? I certainly didn't. My stance is that there is a time and place for everything and last Thursday's edition of the Gazette certainly wasn't the time.

As for a board member giving you a vote of a vote of support. What's that got to do with it? I don't support your views of last week so does that even things up?

I can assure you that I do want the best for ETFC and that is why I leave team selection to Jim as he is the best qualified person we have. Do you have a soccer coaching qualification by the way? <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

So what makes you qualified to voice an opinion on this forum? What makes you qualified to voice an opinion behind the goal? What makes anyone qualified to voice an opinion on football in a bar?

Answer: Because we have opinions and we can.

I don't agree with a lot of what Andy and Southport say but I fully respect their right to say it. Shame it can't re reciprocated.

End of story.

Should the club have asked for a voulenteer rather than A commitee member asigning the task?

It is the fans club and not one persons and I`m not after the job just want our views put across as ours not yours as ours.

My only problem is the heading of the voice of the fans.

That lot from south of the river rapidly turned into animal farm and I wish for us to stick to the original aims of OUR club.

Brunob, you make a number of good points but to put this role into context, the Gazette initially asked ETFC if there was a Fanzine for the club. As the editor of Naughty Sport, the Gazette's Sports Editor asked me if I would write a weekly unpaid column/ opinion piece about the club during the season.

Bearing in mind the amount of controversial material that has been contained in that fanzine over the years, and in previous Gazette articles, what was printed in the Gazette last week was very small beer indeed.

The column is there as a view of a fan, not the club nor any representatives or bodies of the club. I state my opinions and am prepared to be agreed/disagreed with (it's a shame that some others cannot take a similar approach).

Whilst a view of all fans would be more representative as a fans views, how would that be managed on a weekly basis - consensus is often a very watered down final answer. No controversy there and no discussion - therefore no papers purchased to read the column. QED

If this amount of publicity has risen out of one article, I am sure that the Gazette will have considered a very good job has been done.

I put my views up for discussion on a weekly basis for no benefit to me. Think about that before you stick your awe in.

Anyway I'm sure the Gazette will thank Andy for raising the subject!

Just noticed this thread and must apologise to Mr Gumble for not jumping to his defence quicker. I read Wayne's column every week and see nothing in it to alarm me in any way. Being used to his odd ball humour and having stood on the terraces of both EFC and ETFC for 20 odd years I know he only has the best interests of the club at heart.

We have discussed his column on numerous occasions and I have been his eyes and ears at some games that he was unable to attend and i promise you my comments were far more negative then was later printed in the column.

I hope Andy doesn't call me part time.

Lets face up to the facts. There are a number of players who are just not good enough. Like wise there are players that we need to keep and bring on where necessary.

This was exactly what we were discussing before the cup Final. I'm sure we were not the only ones!

All power to your writing hand Mr G.

If you're going to play football at any level then you're going to have to take the rough with the smooth. ETFC players are fortunate enough to play in front of thousands of supporters over the course of a season and have their pictures on the back pages of the local papers.

No one takes pleasure in seeing the efforts of some players besmirched but we have to remember what we are trying to achieve here. We are attempting to create a top non-league football club from scratch. We are not trying to just stay afloat and play ESL standard football. Unfortunately as ETFC moves onwards and upwards we are going to have to cast certain members of the team aside. They're simply the by-product of a growing club.

I'm a little concerned that JC is allowing sentiment to cloud his judgement.

As a supporter I think I'm entitled to question JC's decisions on this forum. He clearly isn't infallible.

Picture this scenario (entirely hypothetical): Let's just say for arguments sake that ETFC fail to perform next season with no meaningful additions to the squad. Would the board be courageous enough to look for a new manager?

Ive kept out of this so far but... I have known Wayne for years and would assure everyone that he is not to be doubted when it comes to his passion for ETFC. So what if he has been asked to do a column for ETFC. You are never going to be in a position where a consensus is going to be printed. Good grief when I think of the total crap that Glyn Hyatt produced week after week covering EFC. THe thing is, it is Wayne's opinion and only his opinion. How many times have we come on here and disagreed about match reports - and they are supposed to be about facts. I know that I get different views on games from people who were standing next to each other.....

I have several discussions with people about players and some pretty personal stick that has been handed out on this forum and from what i understand Wayne's column has not gone that far. Probably more people read this forum than the Gazette anyway.

Takin this to a logical step are we to stop anyone on having a view on anything?

Jim (not often there, still does not consider himself to be a part time supporter as is incredibly passionate about ETFC - bring on Ryman 2 for more games I can get to) Cunneen
