BEST BURGER IN THE RYMAN PREMIER LEAGUE

Recommended Posts

Hmmmm, this is a difficult one as the burgers seem to have suffered from the mediocre football that was on show this season. The worst is easy...The Harrow Borough Burger was rubbish. Cremated god knows how many times over and when asked for onions, you got one that was spread over the burger to disguse it as a load. Yeuk. Following that, the Stortford burger was it's usual dripping, poor quality rubbish. Hitchin's burger was a nightmare come true....Even now, I shudder.

Putting the worst aside, here is my account of the "high lights" of the league for the 2003 / 2004 season

Bognor's fare was quality. A bog standard burger, cooked with a choice of cheese, egg, bacon and other assorted accessories to add to the taste value. The bread pudding was a bonus tho, moist and tasty and large. A nice addition to the half time cup of tea (hmmmm, some may think I'm describing their women here).

Next up, the Aylesbury burger. Nice way to start the season and the cheese 1/2 pounder came with two slices of cheese to get the flavour to come through.

St Albans as well, give good value for money and I do know there are some 'Ricay supporters that were so impressed with the grub, they went up for seconds. A good burger, loads of flavour. Nice chips as well.

The Hayes burger. I went for the full mont, egg, bacon, onions and 1/2 pounder. Very tasty. The chips were a disapointment tho. Obviously left in the boiling fat overnight (or left cooking from their previous home game).

The Thurrock burger was a disapointment from previous seasons. It used to be the "queen" of burgers and certainly one of the best when they were known as Purfleet (and the burger was known as the "Fleet" burger), the name change of the club had obviously affected this top quality gastronomic delight. Still up there as one the best in the league but not the top notch nosh it used to be.

Braintree - Well, this has been consistantly good over the seasons. The bacon, egg, cheese and 1/4 pounder is always a delight to sink yer teeth in. The chips are quality as well. After finishing it, I am always tempted to have another (I resisted this season). The only bonus I can see about visiting there next season is the grub (and to watch us stuff 'em). The que for the food can be a bit long but if you are willing to wait, it is well worth it.

Hmmmm, it is a difficult decision and I was talking to jl about this a couple of weeks ago and he mentioned St. Albans but also the fact that Braintree's burger is worth looking forward to...In light of that fact, I think the award, for me, goes to Braintree for the quality of burger purely on a consistant performance over the past couple of seasons.

The rest of clubs all do a fair choice of food. Hornchurch, Basingstoke, Canvey and it is well cooked and does the job but the above are the best...in my opinion.

For eating facilities, Hornchurch appear to be the best (and I have eaten in the bar). If you have a "basket" meal at Hornchurch then the sausages with chips is well worth the price. They do have a restaurant there and I am told it is very good. I think you have to book tho but is a nice way to start the proceedings if you had to travel a long distance and wanted that full "Urchin" expierence. The same, I hope will apply at BTFC when the club house is renovated and we have our own restaurant.

One word about our food. In my mind, it is up there with the best but cannot be rated as the object of this is to rate the away clubs food. For those newies coming down next season, try the bacon in a french stick. Absolutly fab!!! The chips are nice as well.

I'd probably say from what I've had this season Thurrock and Braintree do the best burgers. Stortford ones were weird. The rolls were far too big for the burger!!!

Sutton's are not bad, Hornchurch and Bedford OK, filled a hole. I was a bit dissapointed with Ricay's offering but I think I caught you on a bad day.

Heybridge's taste OK but the burgers don't look that appetising!

Aylesbury gets a thumbs up not because of the burgers but because they do hot Pukka pies behind the bar, lovely!

Oh and if you are down Canvey, try the hot dogs with bacon and cheese, very nice!

Have to say that I think the standard of food has generally decreased this season - too many outlets not frying their onions, lack of variety, poor baps were just some of the issues encountered.

Saturday's offering from Northwood made a late entry in my top 5, but I'm going for the Bognor offering. Partly, it must be said, that after a predominently orange breakfast at the campsite it was nice to eat some propper food that didn't come out of a can <img src="/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I'm always quite partial to the Maidenhead offering as well, 3rd year in a row that I've had 2!

If there's any Doc Martens types out there, any chance of a low-down on the fare at some of the new grounds we'll be visiting?

Haven't been to many Doc Martens' grounds. Folkestone's is pretty rank, Stafford's nothing special and didn't sample the food at Mangotsfield.

Have heard Grantham's is not all that.

Thank you, thank you for your Burger award.

Must pick you up on the stuffing bit, this season we won 1.0 at your place and it was 2.2 at ours. I know what is coming next, save your fingers, you'll go on about last years 4.0 cup win.

See you next season.

yum yum

St Albans was best for me this year probably down to the fact that we won there and only drew at Braintree which was runner up.

Worst, which made the 'Arrow burger taste like three Michelin star stuff, was Carshalton which I had to return as it was still frozen in the middle - Top class.

I think the food at home is pretty decent stuff but is too expensive at £2.50 for a 1/4 with cheese, a price only matched by Northwood as far as I can remember

  • 2 weeks later...

Didnt get to many away matches this season and after some bad experiences in the past (Boreham Wood - YEEEUGH!!!) resisted the temptation when I did - except at St Albans which was very enjoyable and Northwood whose cheese and bacon burger was a cracking way to end the season - along with the comedy football match too!
