FA STATEMENT

Recommended Posts

The ESL have been good for Enfield Town and Enfield Town have been good for the ESL - no doubts about either statement. As a new club, we've adapted rather well to our surroundings and I do believe we have have been welcome at most grounds, despite previous negative posts. We've given the league good PR by our presence and that has to be a good thing. I know that Cyclops and I particularly enjoyed drinking ESB at Brentwood this season and at many other grounds where we collected trophies. However, the ESL must have realised that we joined the league as a stepping stone up to the Ryman, and I would be surprised if they would feel it neccessary to want to try and block us from accepting the Ryman challenge that has been put before us. I think we should take up the challenge but go on good terms with the ESL. So none of this talk of boycotting grounds please. Why not wait and see what happens, THEN cut the cloth according to fit.

I have no axe to grind either way, but here are some things for you to consider in deciding whether to take the sideways step to the Ryman div2.

Next year div 2 will have only one promotion place to step 4 - the same as ESL/SSML/CCL etc.

Ryman Div 2 is unlikely to exist after next season whereas the other leagues I mention above have an excellent chance of continuing under the new structure albeit possibly in a slightly different format.

The clubs in RD2 who do not gain promotion next year will have to get a place in one of the other leagues mentioned above.

It costs more to compete in the RD2 than the SSML and I assume the ESL therefore any benefits in gaining more sponsorship from the Ryman name are negated by the additional costs.

These points among others were considered by many of the progressive clubs in the SSML. I know that Ruislip Manor, Potters Bar, Hillingdon, Harefield and Beaconsfield (who are noew going to Div1) all turned the "invitation" down.

Hope that this info helps and you do not feel it is an intrusion. Be lucky

I will not be boycotting any games next year whether we are in the ESL or the Ryman. When I first heard about the invitation I was delighted that we would be playing Ryman football however over the past few weeks I have considered the matter in more detail. The Ryman Div 2 only has as many teams as the ESL and it is likely that winning the ESL will gain us entry to Div 1 of the Ryman. If this is the case then the only benefit of joining the Ryman appears to be that we can play Enfield and also have more opportunity of playing clubs such as Hendon, St Albans etc in the league cup. Both of these benefits are quite substantial but I have come round to Andy's point of view. What will be will be.

Obviously if Ryman 2 vanishes after next season then ETFC could feasibly find ourselves crawling back to the ESL with our tail between our legs.

BUT, why would the Ryman League be trying to increase numbers in Ryman 2 if it is to be disbanded after a season?

This doesn't seem to make sense. What appears more likely is that the ESL will lose it's direct promotion to Ryman 1 and instead feed into Ryman 2, hence the ESL's worries over it's status.

It does seem that no-one is yet any the wiser as to the precise implications of re-structuring for the ESL and Ryman 2. I just hope the ETFC board are in possession of the facts.

It seems to me that there are many decisions that are still to be taken, and that there is a shortage of hard facts. This makes the decisions of clubs invited to Ryman 2 very difficult.

To speculate further, if Enfield Town took up the invitation to Ryman 2 and the division were disbanded despite the expansion for next season, all the clubs in next season's Ryman 2, apart from any gaining promotion, would be looking for a place in one of the three feeder leagues. In this case, a move to SSML might make more sense than to ESL.
