LIBRO

Damn, a thread about libraries and I was away from the computer for a day

Hmm, the reports and news stories were all about public libraries. As I see it a large part of the problem is the riduculously low pay for those wanting to work in public libraries. I'd be surprised if more than 1 or 2 people off my course (50 students) end up in public libraries. On the subject of money I did see a library job paying £112k the other day, but I think that's a bit out of my league at the moment - and yes AFF, you'll be pleased to hear it was a public sector job, good to see your taxes being well spent, eh?

As for reversing the decline in library usage - buggered if I know how, people have been trying for years with very little effect. I actually think the problem isn't as bad as a lot of people believe because a lot more people can afford, and prefer to buy books.

The problem of large swathes of the population not reading has a lot more to do with poor education than poor provision of library services.

Err.... Yes, Libro.

£112,000 a year just to check out the books and collect the 1p per day fines? Are you sure it wasn't a typo?

50 people on your course? The report said something about 200 Library Authorities. What's that all about?

Do you blame herts blue for any of the the £100 million in administration? Are you tempted to decline your grant as a gesture of sympathy for the book-reading public? You want to be a proper librarian and that's very laudable. Why don't you volunteer to go in on a Sunday morning, open a library, and get some hands-on, practical experience?

Is the lunatic responsible for any of this?

Will you be at the ground tomorrow?

[That's enough questions.]

1. It was head librarian at the House of Commons.

2. There are lots of other similar courses to mine all over the country - and lots of people who work in public libraries don't have professional qualifications. They tend to do the jobs people are more likely to expect of a conventional librarian.

3.No I'm sure he works very hard. No, I've already spent most of it, do you knwo how much it costs to live in London these days? - well I expect you do with your line of businees, but you know what I mean. And no, my Sundays are currently spent working on coursework, and you usually need more than one person to run a library.

4.Probably, but I suspect his equally lunatic predecessors should shoulder a fair amount of the blame too.

5. As Zeal as said, yes I will be at the ground tomorrow. I've made disappointingly few games this season, but it doesn't help having a girlfriend in Sheffield. Who knows, I might even move back to St Albans next year, which should vastly boost my attendances.

Completely changing the subject, did anyone find out if that story about Costello was true?

The House of Commons Library? £112,000?

Yes but look at the type of people you would be mixing with. It would be better to go for the small library at the Quadrant, Libro. Far more straightforward people.

I stiill think that the hands on experience would be useful, Libro. It did occur to me that more than one person would be required to open and run a library. Calls of nature etc. Why don't you and a couple of chums from the course think about it? You could do your course work at the front desk while the punters are having a browse.

See you tomorrow, Libro.

I think that an HGV Licence would be required to drive a mobile library, Claire.

No, you don't need a HGV license to drive one of those!!!! My dad was given a job driving a mobile library once!!!!!! Lasted a day!!!!

He probable got the sack because he hasn't got a driving license - he's been driving since he was 15 - he learnt to drive on a tractor when he got a job on a farm and never went back to school and never took his driving test!!!!!! This is probably one of the reasons why he got the sack after one day!!!!!!!!!!

"...one of the reasons..."

Nive chap though your Dad may be, Claire, I wooln't think that he would get much sympathy pursuing a claim for unfair dismissal at an Industrial Tribunal.

Mind you, this is the lunatic's Britain. It might be worth a shout. Have a word with my good friend mdetaylor.

Nice chap!!!!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!! You aint met him!!!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!!

He wouldn't know what an industrial tribunal is!!!!!!! No the other reason would probably have been the fact that he'd spent half the morning down the boozer!!!!!!!

He has now invested alot of his winnings from his "marriage" to my mum on the New French Restaurant in Markyate!!!!!!!

So, my guests and i can eat and drink for free!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Therefore he no longer has to work - not that he ever did - lazy sod, and can get paid by just sitting at the bar doing nothing but drinking!!!!

Alright for some!!!!!!!

Idea for libary profits!

1. Make them all mobile

2. Lend the books out for a month at a time

3. Only vist each location every 2 months thus not giving the punters a chance to return them

4. Charge £50 a day fines

5. Don't let anyone know where you are so people couldn't drive to return them

6. Put all this in very very small print when people join (nobody ever reads this)

So if your book was 30 days late @ £50 a day that's a £1,500 fine, lend out 100 books that's £150K - Sorted!!
