Zombies star Atkinson dies at 58

 

Paul Atkinson, guitarist with 1960s band The Zombies, has died in Los Angeles at the age of 58.

 

The British-born musician, who lived in the US for 20 years, went on to become a successful music executive, signing bands such as Abba and Judas Priest.

 

His chart hits with the band included She's Not There, which reached number 12 in the UK in 1964.

 

In January, Atkinson received an award for his work in music - an event which included a reunion of The Zombies.

 

He was honoured with the President's Merit Award from the Recording Academy, the organisation responsible for handing out the Grammy Awards.

 

Atkinson was also instrumental in signing music acts Mr Mister and Patty Smyth.

 

Quintet The Zombies were formed in 1963, with four of its members - including Atkinson - hailing from Hertfordshire.

 

Their debut hit She's Not There remained their biggest, reaching the top three in the US, with follow-up Tell Her No also making the top 10.

 

But further chart success proved elusive, and the band went their separate ways in 1967.

 

Atkinson's career in the music industry took off, while the original five members of The Zombies reunited for the first time in 1997.
