Ryman League - Bedford Town 2 Hornchurch 1

After a five minute flurry from the home side at the start of the first half we began to take control of this game. Keeper Ian Brown came out quickly to block a Bertie Brayley shot after he got clear of the Bedford defence in the 8th minute and 3 minutes later Chris Dillon headed a goalbound header from Ollie Adedeji over the bar for a corner. John Martin then went close a minute later from a Vinnie John pullback from the goalline. Bedford weathered this and had a good chance when a Drew Roberts run and shot was well saved by Danny Gay. Jon Keeling replaced Adam Locke on 32 minutes and Bedford should have taken the lead two minutes later when Chris Dillon took advantage of a Steven Dell slip to get a clear sight of the goal. However his attempt to pass the ball into the net was too weak and Gay collected easily. We deservedly took the lead though in the 34th minute. A Keith Rowland far post cross was knocked back towards the penalty spot by Mark Graham and Keeling was there to hit an unstoppable shot past Brown. Gay made good saves almost straight from the kick off from Niki Stewart and Lee Howarth but we finished the half strongly when a Keeling shot from 18 yards whistled over the bar.

The second half though was oh so different. Within a minute of the restart Bedford had equalised and we seemed asleep in defence as a ball across the area found Chris Dillon unmarked who slid the ball back across Gay and into the far corner. Bertie Brayley drew a good save out of Brown with a header from a corner in the 55th minute but 7 minutes later Drew Roberts scored what turned out to be the winning goal as he ran onto a defence splitting pass from Dillon and slotted past Gay. It was Gay who had to keep the home side from running away with the game when he did well to swipe the ball off the line from a Daniel Purzycki header in the 66th minute and saved well again from Dillon with 5 minutes to go after a poor defensive clearance.

Line-up:- Gay, Dell, Rowland, Adedeji, Southon, Locke (Keeling 32), Graham (R Martin 87), J Martin, John, Brayley (Douglas 87), Williams. Subs not used:- Abbott, McCartney (GK)

Its Not A Case Of Not Putting The Shots Away !

After We Went 1-0 Up, We Thought We Had Won The Game ! The Boys Need To Learn That Team's Aren't Just Gonna Give Up ! Oh God The Number Of Time's That Has Happened This Season !

And In The Second Half Bedford Were Quite Happy To Sit Back And Defend And Catch Us On The Attack ! Which They Did Twice And It Worked To Their Advantage !

I reckon Unc needs to go to the dressing room and share out that "special coffee" he keeps in that thermos of his. That'll get 'em going in the second half.

What is it with our second half performances!?
gd question lol.. very poor, we give excellant support but they don't put in the performance...too much mucking around on the edge of the box, and also trying to put it on the wings which results in a header or a slog away. they should try some more shots from the edge..or putting through to bertie, vinny or even dougie

In the main, the "having a dig from outside the box" tactic has elluded us this season - altho' when we have, we have seen some success with it....either as a direct goal, or from a player following up.

Johnny Keeling's strike vs Thurrock last year was a beaut! More of those would be nice.

But, we must give opposition defenders some credit for us "faffing around" on the edge of the box. If they dont let you have a shot, ipso facto, you can't score!

And overall, I think the standard of defending in this division has generally been pretty good this season.

If we win all our home games and snatch a few draws away, we should be seeing Conf South next season. Or I should say...we deserve "promotion", as the lads have had an outstanding season so far.

We can't afford to take our foot off the pedal until after the Canvey match, that's all.
