That IS a Football League pedigree

We at the Mighty Saints have a number of players with football league experience currently wearing the yellow & blue.

With all due respect to Leyton Orient, Peterborough United, Luton Town, Sheffield Wednesday, Wycombe Wanderers, Birmingham City, Shrewsbury Town, Cambridge United, Gillingham etc. etc., I hear that Steve Castle has finally signed a player with a serious Football League Club on his C.V.

28 year old Declan Perkins was at Southend United in 1995/6. The former Eire U21 International started 1 League game and came off the subs bench 5 times scoring 1 goal for the Mighty Shrimpers.

The news brought fond memories flooding back to me of Garry Moore, Bill Garner, Peter Taylor, Harry Threadgold, [i was only three when I saw the curtain fall on his magnificent career at the club], Mike Beasley, Stan Cullymore, Leo Roget, Justin Edinburgh and an endless list of Roots Hall greats that I thought I would share with you.

As an aside, I was there when Ben Lewis scored on his debut 5 or 6 years ago. He didn't quite achieve cult status at Southend, moving on shortly after to Heybridge Swifts, controversially getting The Legend sent off at Clarence Park a few years ago, and now at Ford United where he came off the bench on Tuesday night.

That's enough of a trip down Memory Lane.

One more thing.

According to the back page of The Observer, the Club has signed the Reserves goalkeeper Ricky Perks until the end of the season. I wonder if he is related to the Ricky Perks, who, according to a match report on the inside page today, came off the bench and scored an extra time hat-trick for Peacock against Mermaid in the Observer Intermediate Cup final on Sunday.

Hi EFMTFTV.

Ben Lewis has played for Southend United, Colchester, Grays, Heybridge Swifts, Chelmsford City and Ford United.

Ricky Perks plays for The Reserves, Sandridge Rovers and, perhaps, Peacock.

Declan Perkins' former clubs include Purfleet, Witham, Braintree, Dulwich Hamlet, Ford United and Sing Tao, that well known club from Hong Kong.

No reference to Clapton according to my archives.

I'm always suspecious of players who just go from one crap club to another. It suggests to me that they didn't make the grade at a crap club so what makes us think they'll do it here (at a sleeping giant, of course)

And Clapton is a refrence to many of Mr Castle's signings this season, most that lasted 45 minutes!

Hi HKS.

Thanks for that. Ricky is clearly a versatile chap then.

Oh, by the way HKS. Are you familiar with Sing Tao in Hong Kong? Does it translate to 'Happy Valley'?

Who's Chilavert? Will he be joining us too?

Hi Rob.

I think you will find that your archive is wrong concerning Declan Perkins and Peterborough United but correct concerning Waltham Forest. Didn't we have another player from that leading Essex club earlier in the season?

Oh, by the way. Thanks for the news that Declan played for Dulwich Hamlet. Is that the same Dulwich Hamlet to which I referred in my earlier posting?

OK, maybe not Peterborough (you can't trust these websites!) but I'm still checking.

Happy Valley appear not to be the same club as Sing Tao but he definitely turned out for them (HV) at least once.

Didn't Wes Jackman come from Waltham Forest? There have been so many.... <img src="/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I think you're right about Wes, Rob.

I think that Andy Oxby came from Romford but there was another from Waltham Forest. Richards? Toms? Justin someone who played the first half at Hitchin? was it Edwards?

Anyway.

H AFF, Sing Tao, is a beer I believe. I certainly drank a lot of something with a very similar sounding name, in my herts/ chinese accent anyway.

Chilavert is the Peruvian Goalkeeper who's scored something like 60 international goals. I think he takes free kicks, pens and anything else that may give him a scoring opportunity.

Apparently Ricky can play centre half as well according to out local press secretary, Mr Edwards. Versatile indeed.

I expect that he can also leap tall buildings in a single bound.
