Ryman League - Sutton United 3 Hornchurch 1

Sometimes when you see a disappointing performance like this you wonder when your team will win again, but it must be remembered that amongst Sutton's mixed results is a 3-1 defeat of Canvey Island - their first home defeat this season. Obviously Sutton can muster great performances, and that's what they did today.

With a strong wind at our back in the first half we were often in the Sutton half and Gary Abbott dragged a shot wide in the 17th minute. Sutton, though, took the lead after 28 minutes through Jon Nurse who poked the ball home at the far post after a break down the right. Straight after, Ollie Adedeji came on for Lee Matthews and we had a trio of chances. Gary Abbott headed against the bar on 30 minutes and headed just wide 5 minutes later, but our third chance found the target. A John Martin 41st minute corner was headed back across the area by Abbott, Adam Locke's volley was parried by Sutton keeper Andy Iga and Andy Douglas pounced to put away the loose ball from close range.

The wind did not subside during half time and Sutton took command after the restart. Those who cite the wind as the cause of Suttons second half dominance might have a point, but they were stronger than us and our control and passing at times played into their hands. A Sutton header was cleared off the line in the 59th minute, but they re-took the lead a minute later when the referee spotted a push in the area and awarded a penalty which was converted by Nicky Bailey. A double substitution on 71 minutes of Vinnie John and Bertie Brayley for Andy Douglas and Adam Locke gave us faint hope, but it only lasted 4 minutes when Nurse struck again, this time a low shot from the edge of the area, to make it 3-1.

Line-up:- Gay, Gooding, Rowland, Southon, Matthews (Adedeji 29), Williams, Graham, Locke (Brayley 71), Abbott, Douglas (John 71), J Martin. Subs not used:- Kerrigan, McCartney (GK).

Hornchurch had the wind in the first half!!??

In the first half you looked like the best side we'd had down here.

The 'comedy' push, which was a definite penalty but sadly for you guys it was completely unecessary.

We play a lot better against decent sides hence some of our 'strange' results.

Good luck to you for the rest of the season, good side, good fans. Shame about George Borg being a tw*t over the penalty and at the final whistle!

Good luck to the urchins though.

Cheers Milsy

All The best for the season, well don't go finishing above us though .

For Me it's too easy too blame what was very poor conditions, the sad truth is we did not play anywhere near well enough to challenge Sutton. The first half was closer but we just didn't seem to come out in second half . . Their wingers bossed the day.

My One bright spark though was Keith Rowlands !
