The St Albans incident and their own fans.

What is the worst reaction and best by a player from banter from the opposition fans.

Who couldn't take it and who could ?

----------------------------------------------------------------

I would say the worst was Goalkeeper Paul Gothard who seemed very close to losing it when we played Thurrock at their ground. He came in for alot of slating by us and letting in three goals didn't help his cause. <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

The Best was Braintree's keeper (at Braintree) who took refrences to his hair style so well he was applauded by us off the pitch.

Fourtunalty I don't make a habit of remembering non-league footballers names but there have been a few down the years.

Best was Kevin Mitchell, the old Marlow and Windsor keeper and I seem to remember some Staines Town defender (notice we're going back a few years now when most players used to be good blokes and not mega-ego tosspots)

Worst - Well obviously the 'ricky keeper took exception to being asked if he was injured, but we won't go into that! - Les Cleevley I think must be the one everybody remembers, punched many a supporter but was stangely articulate when not losing his head (articulate is something else not usually banded around when refering to non-leauge players these days as well)

I was going to mention Cleevely (sp?) who on one occasion hurdled the perimeter fence and chased one of our fans across the terracing BEFORE the game had even started.

The ex-Hampton Australian goalie Mautone also deserves a mention for smacking one of our fans in the face for not giving the ball back quick enough. Noel Imber (B'wood) is also incredibly easy to wind up.

Does anyone remember the incident with Les at Dulwich away? Late on in the match he came over to the fence behind the goal to see who wanted some? I think Retarded Turtle was he intended target. The physio and one of the defenders was up for it too.

On balance, it could be argued (by the unkind, I hasten to add) that Mr Turtle would have probably deserved it.

That said, I would not have condoned it like the board of a, shall we say, theoretical Hertfordshire-based club appear to have.

Still waiting news of the players' departure and a formal club apology to the victims. - you heard anything? The silence is deafening!

Dmitri Kharine against Berko sticks in my mind.....twas his first full appearance for us little old urchins and I had already noticed that Dmitri..(gent that he was)..was struggling badly with his mind set at actually finding himself in Rymans Div 1 Nth....

come the big day....half a dozen or so Berko fans got right behind his goal and started winding him up straight away...of course he had heard it all before....but not in a ground with less than 150 supporters and right in his face to boot....

the telltale signs were apparent and I feared the worst when instead of actually taking a goal kick UP the field...he turned around and lashed the ball at the kids.....had Marsden...(our then manager)...been a little more experienced in such ungentlemanly behaviour ...he may well have yanked him off.....

however....1 minute to go.....urchins hanging onto a 1-0 lead and one of the berko players rushed into Dimitri...(who has the ball safely in his hands and can now take his time awaiting the final whistle)....said something to Dimitri...we never found out what.......and...

upon receipt of such gratitudes Dimitri promptly lost it completely...threw the ball away and felled the offending striker with the best headbutt I've ever seen since I attended a stag night at Barrowlands in Glasgow in 1968....

off went Dimitri...in went the penalty...(94th Min)

1-1..... <img src="/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

Les Cleeveley tried to lamp one of our fans during half time 'entertainment' so he'll always be high up there.

Kevin Mitchell was always a star. Remember him sharing a cup of someones tea about ten years ago when we were playing at Marlow and always took stick with good humour.

Seems our own Alan Foster (current keeper) is also renowned for being unable to handle a bit of stick judging from Bracknell fans comments after our match at the weekend.

My personal favourite goes to Jamie Jarvis who has a vendetta with Slough for some unknown reason (rejected as a kid perhaps??). Unprovoked verbals with a female fan at our home game - cue mass celebration with a last minute equaliser after he gave away the penalty!

It's always keepers isn't it...

Remember Brucie Grobelaar being a good laugh when we beat Chesham with him in goal... Turned round and conducted the "show me the money" songs...

More recently, last season if I remember - the Bishops Stortford keeper came up with a nice line - when asked if he would stop shouting at his back 4 because one of our fans had a headache he responded with - "you'd be shouting too if you had Colin Wall in your defence!"

I remember Kevin Mitchell well from our Enfield days as well as a few others and we also had a good laugh with Grobelaar in his first league match for chesham,a nice bloke in the bar afterwards as well.

The best this season was Matt Pollard of Flackwell Heath who talked through the entire game, conducted the singing, made requests for songs, danced and donated his match fee to a little girl in a wheelchair, all this as we beat them in the pouring rain, what a gent.

The only bad time in three years we had with a keeper was a certain east london club whos keeper was known to us and spoke often during the game until late on when he was sent off, unfairly, when we let the ref know our oppinion of his decision. For the return we were told we couldn`t stand behind the goal because they didn`t want us abusing their keeper.this didn`t stop them accusing us of throwing things at him from the sideline despite the fact that we were stood talking to the only decent steward they had that day.

Best: The Braintree keeper and the hairstyle. He took a ball in the face and one of our fans produced a hairbrush, though in agony, he and the physio were in hysterics.

Worst: Don't remember the name but it was a big black guy wearing number 4 for Yeading in a friendly, trying to pick fights with the crowd....at a FRIENDLY

Best- Danny Potter at last season's Canvey Island v. Bedford Town match...he'd taken the biggest load of stick for being homosexual (he's far from it???) and when the ball was dead he turned his back to us and bared his [****!!****], not a nice sight, but hilarious all the same.

Worst- This season against Leyton of Div 1 in FA Cup 3rd Qualifying Round, the goalie and defenders were being dirty all over the pitch, high tackles etc. The goalie and one of the defenders clattered each other and the defender was injured, we all shouted "GET UP" and things like that, and the goalie and other players started flashing the V signs and rubbing themselves down, didn't go down well with the Bedford faithful.

Danny Potter is a great bloke and a fine keeper. Seem to remember that incident at Bedford. The fans at Canvey still chant "Danny show us your ar.e!"

As for being gay, well he has a year old daughter although the haircut does him no favours!
