The value of a good discussion forum

Some really nice comments over on the Swifts messageboard. Loads of compliments about the Canvey squad and what Jeff King has achieved. It strikes me that we, as a group of fans, have come out of this season really well. Congratulations to all my fellow Yellow Army fanatics who have never once posted any arrogant or big headed comments on this board and have steadfastly refused to rub anyone’s noses in it, even when our team has whitewashed the opposition. I know my pessimism has caused something of a laugh in the run-in, but all through the season we, as a fanbase, have kept level heads and refused the temptation to ‘give it large’ to fans from other clubs.

Notice how we have rid our board of the snipers and idiots who used to come here regularly in an attempt to wind us up. Even our dear old mates over at St Albans have realised that we are a decent bunch who, although up for a laugh, treat our football in a serious way but refuse to rise to the bait. There is some great banter between us nowadays and it’s strange to think that there is so much mutual respect between the two sets of fans. Also you notice that gone are the various eagles – bald, fat or otherwise – who used to love coming here to tell us how crap we are and how we all live in caravans, eat candy floss etc., etc. Then we have to celebrate the demise of John Crawshaw who eventually ran in such ever decreasing circles (once we all discovered God) that he ended up disappearing up his own jacksy some time ago.

It will be nice to re-make old acquaintances with Gravesend next season and hopefully make some new friends across the various Conference discussion boards. But no matter how well we do, I know we will keep a sensible attitude and hopefully build on the respect that we have earned over the past season.

So, special thanks must go to Ian who, in spite of being treated so dreadfully by Canvey Island FC, has kept this message board up and running on our behalf when the club is too frightened to put a forum on its own website. What a terrific way this forum has proved to build great friendships, develop lasating relationships, have some banter and generally publicise our club across the length and breadth of the country.

Agree with Merv about the respect Canvey have earned.

I've talked recently to Maidenhead and Hornchurch fans and they've all talked about what a great footballing side we are. In fact an Urchins' fan said to me that we're the best side they've played this season and that includes the likes of Darlington, Tranmere and Stevenage.

I believe we didn't win too many fans with our arrogance two years ago but that has changed. The EFM fundraising for Candy Bloomfield built bridges between Canvey and St Albans supporters on these forums and I believe there is a great deal of respect between Canvey and Hornchurch fans for what their two clubs have achieved in such a short space of time.

We'll always get our snipers but we're used to it by now. That's just jealousy. This year while the likes of Kettering have been larging it up, we've kept quiet and gone about our job and so far have done it to perfection.

Here's to next season and the continuation of more lively discussion.
