Enfield Town 2 Hullbridge Sports 0

Recommended Posts

Town won today and despite the officials attempt to even it up 2 – 0 was a fair reflection on the result.

After 7 minutes Danny Clarke charged down the wing only to be brought down in the box. Penalty and the referee pointed to the spot. He then went over to the linesman who suggested Daniel had had a little tug before that – decision changed to Goal Kick. Town fans were gutted for Daniel who we were willing to take the penalty.

A minute later identical move same players but this time Daniel stayed on his feet and slotted the ball under the diving keeper. 1 – 0. Justice! The players lifted Daniel aloft for his first goal this time back for Town and his 50th ever for the Town. Great attitude from Daniel that got just the reward it deserved.

The first half Town were all over Hullbridge but couldn’t get the cricket score we were looking for. Great attempts from Billy Cove, Graeme Hall, Johhny Ridout and Lee Smith.

Second started with more of the same and eventually Daniel Clarke slotted the ball through for Lee Smith to nail in the 58th minute. 2 – 0. Then Hullbridge got a penalty – Not sure why but if it had gone much wider it would have been a throw on! Chants of are you “Hullbridge in disguise” went up.

Daniel Francis came on and had a fantastic run which was almost rewarded with an idyllic result.

Shot after shot peppered the goal. On one occasion the ball looking like it had crossed the line but no goal given.

Fair result on the balance of play. Good to see Daniel break his duck.

Gate 286. And the day will be remembered for Lee Digby’s new hairdo – Flame yellow! Lee also got a birthday cake with a candle!

Chopper heading the ball

Knew I forgot something - Chopper didn't just clear with a header once but twice in quick succession. There is one for the statisticians amongst us. I know he wasn't able to handle it it doesn't do much for the nerves. Well done and that goes for the whole defensive team.

Can anyone think of another occasion when the keeper headed the ball away twice in quick succession. The only oe i can think of is a singel header from Barthez for Man Utd.

I see that the Town exiles beat Romford as well! I reckon the sun is beginning to set on Romfords Season!

to be fair Abbeynut, this you had to see,

the ref gives a pen, and at this time the lino is not flagging.

AFTER the whistle had gone the lino decides to flag and says there was an infringement before hand (which he didn't give at the time)

Also same lino, could not see when the ball was kicked and a player running thru (not clarkee)

hey ho, as we have said before we get the officals we deserve; but this lino we have had a couple of times recently and he now has no friends in ET.

The defence still looks suspect.

Hullbridge hit the post, had a penalty and chopper indeed had to clear with his head twice as there were no other defenders around to assist him.

This is not a championship winning side and Jim has to rebuild, I would hope before the season is out but certainly during the close season.

The funniest thing that happened yesterday was in the bar afterwards when the lino said he doesn't take any notice of what goes on behind him. When I said that this is exactly the same as when something is happening in front of him, he just did not know what to say. Laugh? I nearly wet myself!

It was all taken in the best possible way and we all had a good laugh.

Good crowd.

Good TEAM performance.

Good to be back on a winning roll. I know we didn't win last week, but at least we won yesterday.

Enjoyable if a little frustrating match on Saturday. How many times this season have we left a match wondering how we didn't score far more goals than we did!!

Lee Smith is playing exceptional football at the moment. We really missed him while he was injured.

And a few words re Daniel Clarke - for me he is a far better player since his return from Ilford. He has always scored lots of goals at this level, but from the games I have seen since his return he is a far, far better TEAM player than before. Despite comments from one of the Ilford supporters on this forum earlier, I think he has a great first touch - considering the battering he knows is coming his way when the ball is hit to him long. Two big improvements I have seen:

1) his pace / skill gets him to a scoring position, but he would be better off passing to somebody else better placed. In the old days he would ALWAYS shoot. Now he looks up and passes

2) yes he gets caught offside more times than he should, but he is bending his runs more - and timing them better

Good for you Daniel - keep working hard.

Hadn't noticed Clarkee being offside much recently. He just didn't seem to be getting the rub of the green at places like Brentwood where the ball was bobbling about every time he was about to shoot. I think he's turned the corner now.

Defence still looked a bit shakey on Saturday and somehow we could've dropped points again were it not for an awful penalty and Chopper's heading heroics.

I know lots of us keep saying it, but is there any chance of trying a 4-4-2?

Given only those who played on Sat, how about.....

back 4 of: baldwin, snowden, hall, gant

midfield: francis, ridout, geraghty, smith

up front: clarke, cove

Obviously Chopper in goal. Ideally I'd like to see Digby at right back and Negus at either left back or left midfield.

We're a bit short of naturally left-sided players at the moment.
