Big Fish

Anyone else seen it yet?

Took my daughter to see it tonight and I was impressed with it. It's not necessarily a "kids film" - in fact, I would say it's NOT a kids film, despite there being a giant in it.

Like most of Tim Burton's creations, it's dark, multilayered, rich in symbolism, and well crafted. [i'll be thinking about this one for a few weeks, I imagine].

Essentially, the main story line is a son's attempt at trying to piece together his father's life - and he tries to make a distinction between his dad's "tall stories" with his [the son's]imagined version of reality.

There's no guns, no car chases, no violence. If that's ONLY what you're into, don't bother. If you want to see something inspiring and thought provoking then DO.

Ewen McGregor is good in it, as is Albert Finney. Both have American accents, but unlike the cast of Tooth, they are very convincing. [it's a particular bugbear of mine, so they must have been good for me to say that!!]

I won't say too much, but I definately recommend it...especially for blokes as the main framework of the film is about a son's relationship with his father.

I haven't seen many films lately where the audience stayed in their seats while the end credits rolled. No one got up and left quickly. Possibly a mark of a good film.

Sounds good.

Last film I saw in the cinema that totally bewitched me was A Beautiful Mind - one of the finest films I've ever seen.

I don't watch films as a rule (my attention span is appalling!) but A Beautiful Mind had my attention for two and a half solid hours!

That and American Beauty are the only films that have interested me in the last five years!

I really want to go and see this film. The adverts look really good, and it seems like a really nice film.

Ewen McGregor is also in it, which i another great reason to go!!!! Just need to find the time to go and see it!!!!!!

The last film i went to see was Scary Movie 3 with Helski!!!!! Never, ever go and see a comedy at the cinema with me, unless you're prepared to be totally embarrased by me laughing in the cinema!!!!!

Russell Crowe, who is absolutely brilliant in it, plays genius mathematician John Nash who suffers from severe mental illness.

Very thought-provoking, to the point where you find yourself wondering about your own sanity.

I wouldn't say it starts slowly, but I was beginning to wonder where it was going, and then bam! You're slap bang in the middle of an incredibly touching story.

Best film I've seen in years and years and years.

Does sound good! I'll check that out.

Anyone like Being John Malkovich [?]. That's a pretty good, thought provoking film. So many different "themes" in that one.

Mind you, some of my favourite films that I can watch over and over again are..in no particular order...

-Withnail & I

-The Bedsitting Room [spike Milligan]

-Lawrence f Arabia

-Oliver [Lionel Bart's, the ONLY musical I like]

-One Flew Over the Cookoo's Nest

-Malkovich

-Ed Wood

-Passport to Pimlico

-The Admirable Crichton

-Edward Scissorhands

-The Longest Day

-Delicatessen

I wanna see Big Fish again, but I think that one might join the list eventually.

someone's gonna say some others and I'm gonna go "yeah yeah..love it", I bet!! <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

You might change your mind when you find out that Nik Cage is a West Ham fan!! No..really!! When he was filming Captain Correli's blah blah, there were a few West Ham fans on the film crew, and they converted him. He went over, and appeared in the following week's programme if I remember correctly.

Malkovich - not a horror film. Bit of a "slow burner", pace wise. Funny, but not necessarily ROFL funny. Manages to deal with the themes of "gender orientation", "voyeurism", "control and power", and "science": space-time continuum theory, and the possible existence of portals into other dimensions.

Admirable Crichton - Kenneth More plays a butler to a rich family who go on a world cruise on their own yacht. Get shipwrecked...and the upper crust are shown for being the incapable lot they are. Crichton [More] - because of his practical skills [he can build shelters, make clothes, hunts, great cook - survival, in short]- eventually rises to the top in the new social order on the island.

I like it because of the historical background in which it was made - post-war class issues, fear of the A-bomb and the destruction of civilisation [who will survive? who should be saved to rebuild the "new world"]

Funny enough, the Bedsitting Room is set in post-nuclear holocaust London - has Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Arthur Lowe, Harry Secombe,Michael Horden,and...erm...erm [what's his name?]

Monsieur Hulots Holiday

Jacques Tati! I've seen a few of his. This one is great, but I haven't seen it for yonks. No doubt it's on DVD now.
Remember when BBC/Channel4 used to put "foreign" films on after 11pm. Used to love 'em. French, Czech, Polish, Aussie...loads of really good films! Why is it then, that they insist on putting American ones on. Not necessarily dissin' 'em, but it seems they'd rather put on a crap American film than a great Continental one.

Oh..there's another film I was impressed with.....Leon!!
