to do quizzes! Our seminar this morning was an hour and a half of teaching us how to find the answers to these questions! (message to AFF - Tony is really spending the public's money wisely - isn't he?)

See how many you know

26. To what extenty is 'similar to' similar to 'different to', or should 'different to' be treated differently?

27. What is the longest word is English with no repeated letters?

I knew 3,7,10,13,15,16,22 and 27. Apparently one bloke in the other group knew 22 of them from his head!!

21. Well it wasn't Music 100.

What exactly is the point of this garbage, I mean it won't get your car started on a cold morning or fix the plumbing, isn't it about time these universitys started teaching something worthwhile. And don't you just become a better librarian afterwards anyway, shouldn't they be teaching you how to arrange things in alphabetical order in record time?

Forgot to respond to this abuse!

It's not pointless, the point is not to learn the specific answers to each of the questions, but how to go about finding information. Admittedly large parts of information can now be found through the internet, but there are still large swathes of information that can't be found just by searching for them on google. Firm voice, most of the work done by librarians (and I mean at the professional level, not just stamping books in public libraries) is related to organizing and finding information for people. If you believe education is important then what we do is important, if however you believe everyone should be learning how to start cars or fix the pluumbing, then yes, I guess what I do is completely pointless.

I'm guessing you've never had to, for example, write a lengthy essay on a subject for which you needed to do some research?, or produce a report for which you needed information that was not available on the internet? If not why do you feel like you can criticise what I do when you know nothing about it? I get the impression from what you say that your job is not particularly difficult, or complicated, but I'm sure you'd (rightly) tell us otherwise.

And as for the answers, I'm too demoralised to relay them all, but yes Zeal you were right, Shqiperia is Albania (I knew that from Panini sticker albums) The most southerly fishing zone is Fitzroy (formerly Trafalgar) and the word was 'uncopyrightable' I'm sure you told me that, and my lecture had to admit that her answer of ambidextrously was in fact shorter!

Rant over.
