Jay-Z vs The Beatles

Recommended Posts

It was...but then again, Tomorrow Never Knows is a fairly massive departure from the rest of Rubber Soul.

Lately, Robert Elms [bBC London 94.9] and Jonathan Ross have disparaged The Beatles by comparing Yellow Submarine with "God Only Knows" [beach Boys] and Waterloo Sunset. Talk about selective analysis.

But, if you've ever listened to Submarine with cans, or even the mono mix in stereo - Blimey!! That's a quality piece of recording, the backing harmonies are well "away" from the main harmony. In fact, once you listen to the backing harmonies, it's hard to sing the song in the same way again.

Now...if Barrett's Floyd had done Yellow Submarine it might be held in higher regard. Think Effervessing Elephant!

That is an excellent point.

re: Elms/Ross. I presume they were taking the piss, or were they seriously trying to say the Beatles were inferior to the Beach Boys or the Kinks??

Both tremendous bands, but the Beatles are in a different class altogether.

Is that serious? I'm trying to find the "joke" in it.

As for Elms - he just dislikes the Beatles full stop, and will do anything to "prove" they were not as good as we all know. Don't know about Wossy? God Only Knows is a well crafted and recorded track - but none of Wilson's compositions have a patch on Beatles'.

Mind you, probably one of the best intros to a song - in my mind - is California Girls. Great intro, all shimmering guitars and bass harmonicas [whatever], very evocative, even spine tingling...but then it goes into that plodding twelve bar blues with shallow lyrics. Bummer.

Led Zep 3 is a good album too. Lots of different textures on that one. Folk, blues and metal. Who can dislike Since I've Been Loving You?

The only thing that lets Led Zep down [for me] is the lyrics. Not punchy or relevent or humourous enough.

Of course this list changes all the time!

Hit the nail on the head there really, Chubbhead.

Whenever we have a Trophy game up north, and I go by coach, I always listen to Sgt Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour back to back.

There's something so quintessentially English about 1967-era Beatles, and I might be going mad, but Sgt Pepper always sounds so much better once you get north of Birmingham!

Mal- no really, Celine DID cover that track. I think it was on the same album as the Jim Carrey one FFUSA was talking about. Didn't George Martin put together an album of such covers to celebrate the Beatles or something? How could he!

Also, I have an album of a classical orchestra 'doing the Beatles'. Needless to say, the tracks don't translate as well as you would have thought they would.

Aas for the Beach Boys, as much as I love them, I don't think you can compare the two bands. They are essentially so different. How can you compare a band whose music is influenced by working-class-rainy-Liverpool to a band influenced by the sunny climes of America( i admit here and now my background knowledege of 't'Boys' is not great). It might seem like a stupid thing to say, but I think you can here the difference in the songs and the subject matter of the songs.

No one could dispute that the Beatles are one of the best bands of all time. The diversity and quality of their back catalogue just speaks for itself.

Got to aggree with you on the lyrics front, too many mentions of 'Baby' and lack of depth could be considered a chink in the Led Zep armour. Tracks like 'Thank You' and 'Since I've Been Loving You' are stronger lyrical tracks. But musically they make up for it, very few bands could match them.

Beach Boys are a band I've admired from a far, they have their own unique sound but I've never really got in to it.

As for being a Bowie Man.. Well there's not much wrong with that, I reckon Ziggy Stardust is still a favourite. His recent comeback hasn't really bought up anything nearly as good, but after the concert last year he's still up there.

On balance, and this will probably change, my favourite album is still OK Computer.
