Well there you go- he DOES do his own songs! But then, as I'm sure you've listened to the album before making a judgement, you probably already knew that.

Anyway, what's the big deal about doing covers, or singing someone else's songs. Ella Fitzgerald? She sang other people's songs. Aretha Franklin? so did she. Now, would you dismiss them as crap? No, both great singers (and yes, I know Franklin isn't a jazz singer, and yes I know she did write some songs, but I'm merely illustrating a point here).

They did something very different to the original, the soul covers of Beatles tracks had a lot of credibility because at the time of singing these songs, they were great artists in their own right. If the first thing you get known for is your cover versions then it doesn't go down so well. I'm not saying it's right, just the way I look at it!

Right, this could turn into a rant here!

Firstly,(this isn't aimed at you SteveP, I'm just making a general point <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> ) when Cullum does a cover version he does make it his own and makes it different to the original. I refer you, once again, to his cover of 'i could have danced all night', or his version of 'Wind cries mary'. Both of them are quality. FACT. (as David Brent would say).

Secondly, he isn't known just for his covers. He's already had two albums out before this, he played in jazz cafes in Paris, London, he's played the Oak Room in New York (quite prestigious, so I here). His first single is a track written by his brother and was only made a double A-side when the geezer out of N.E.R.D heard his cover of 'Frontin' and liked it so much he demanded it be put down on cd. Now I don't think he would have achieved all of this if he didn't have SOME talent of his own.

Thirdly, he's said himself that he isn't the best jazz musician out there. He got lucky, and if that means that other great musicians get a crack at the whip, them what the hell!

To me, the whole thing stinks of music snobbery. Show me the rule book that says to be taken seriously as a jazz musician you have to be a this or you have to be that. In my opinion, it's not things like Pop Idol that's killing UK talent, it's music snobbery and people who aren't willing to listen.

I FKING HATE IT !GGGRRRRRRRR!!!!!

RANT OVER.

Well Chubby you make your point very well and no one is saying that Cullum should be classed as Pop Idol, even I'm not that harsh! Also said I quite liked the 'High and Dry Cover' if someone cover's Radiohead with the due respect it deserves, then they are worthy of some respect.

But you have to realise that Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin wera/are Major talents in their own right. JC as he likes to be known by his friends, admits he is not the greatest and I am not all against him as at least he's honest.

No one says they'e not taking him seriously as a jazz artist, just the only thing I've really heard from him is covers, I blame radio stations myself!

chubbster first things first

i have enduered the album hence my Jazz-lite pop

my point about covers is NOT consigned to just young James rather the way these so callled stars are marketed ...have to rely on a cover to get their muzik across...

who's talkin about Aretha or Ella ...different discussion ...BTW if u ever track down a 10' by Nick Holder that samples Ella...'sometimes im happy sometimes im blue' snap it up

ur using collaborations as a measure of his talent something that Madonna and Kylie have made a career out of , agian another arguement

as for music snobbery killing uk talent...its the mainstream djs/pluggers/media et al thats doing a very good job of that people who cite DD as more worthwile than any bands/djs who cretaed a so called scene that revolutionised not only the music industry but also whole societys attitude to life

BTW im refering to Punk and "Acid House"

and yes ultimately it is the music, like Dido's, he's resembles beige ,...all of this is my opinion of course
