Ralph Pickering must really like The Cure

Recommended Posts

Saves you having to think what to get me. Don't worry about wrapping them up for me though mate.

As ever, they are overlooked for such awards, but I'm sure they won't be losing any sleep over it. As prestigious as a Brit Award is, there can be no arguing that DM have stood the test of time. 24 years on and three of the original members are still going strong. A new album in the pipeline, and another sell out tour to come no doubt.

Day after your birthday!
Remind me again which Lifetime Achievement awards Depeche Mode won last year??

Duran who?

...a Euro fascination swept through Detroit in the '80s, elevating continental acts such as Front 242, Depeche Mode , and Meat Beat Manifesto as well as new-wave American groups such as Devo, the B-52's and Talking Heads to star status. ..

...With May having met Atkins and Saunderson at high school, the trio hung out in the early eighties and slowly begun developing their own scene. Influence and inspiration came from imported European electropop crystallised by the likes of Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode , New Order and Nitzer Ebb and a fascination with synthesisers...

Derrick May
is one of the founding fathers of Detroit techno, a precursor of its many variants and particularly of acid house. His aesthetic, skeletal, melancholy style gained him the nickname of "the Miles Davis of techno". He introduced a futuristic vision in dance music.

Juan Atkins
He and an entire generation of black electronic musicians from Detroit — including Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Underground Resistance and Carl Craig — are worshipped overseas, often credited as a pivotal spark in the techno/electronica revolution that swept over Europe in the '80s

Kevin Saunderson
is a legend in his own right, known and respected around the World, as one of the three Artist/Producer/DJs from Detroit, who originated Techno/House music, which helped to reshape the future of Dance music as we know it.

the 'Mode' worthier recipients,...

I'm not a DM fan, gertcha, but it's hard to disagree with you, and you can't argue against their success.

Musically very different, but DM and DD's history has tended to mirror one another's.

** '81-'85 - Golden years.

** Early '90s - brief resurgence in popularity with widely acclaimed albums.

** Still have massive fan bases.

** Still sell out every tour they do.

How many other bands who started out in the late '70s/early '80s are still going so strong??

(JK - this is not a cue for you to list a load of obscure bands I've never heard of!! )

I've got a Front 242 single and a Nitzer Ebb one!

As for lifetime acheivement awards, not sure I'd like to be reconised in the same awards ceremany as Dido and Busted
