Yes I do. Do you think it is right for johnny foreigner to come over here and sponge off our benefits system (which I as one of millions contribute to) then have the cheek to moan when the DSS won't pay his phone bill? Why should we welcome people who won't pay their own way?

 

We have people who are homeless or needing operations and they have to wait because the resources aren't there, yet we, as a nation, find the resources to fund the asylum seekers & to wage war on Iraq.

 

When the government warns of a welfare timebomb waiting to happen it is partly because of the explosion in asylum.

 

As for the lazy workshy b***ards in this country - if they don't want to work then sign them up to the army. At least that way the money we spend waging war would be slightly offset against the savings in benefits.

 

Then again, all these people who want to be British citizens..... perhaps we should make doing national service a criteria to entering our shores!

Fairly sensible I would say. Although I don't quite agree with the national service bit. Our armed forces are a professional bunch and I wouldn't want to see that professionalism undermined, as it is in some sectors of the American military.

I think everyone, from an early age, should be encouraged to do some community-enriching activity - like cleaning parks, streets, helping care for elderly and disabled - at some point in their lives. Perhaps over time we'd see less incidence of vandalism, grafitti,etc..Who knows?

Mind you, aren't kids supposed to be learning "good-citizenship" at school these days? It's doing a jack-load of good at the mo'.

Fleet fanatic - you answered my first question i.e. you believe some people are more important and deserving of benefits simply because of the country they were born in - but you didn't tell me why. You simply went on a rant about 'Johnny Foreigner'

 

You say 'why should we welcome people who won't pay their way?' As I've said before immigrants to this country provide a net tax benefit, okay, there may be some who end up costing the country money, but there is no way you can tell who these people will be before they enter.

 

An interesting point was made by a speaker on the radio this weekend, he contrasted some soundbites from the people of Burnley saying the asylum seekers were ruining their town and taking all their facilities and benefits, and then pointed out the tiny proportion of actualy asylum seekers in Burnley (I think it was much lower than 1% of the population)

 

I'm more interested in why you believe that the luck of where you are born should dictate certain things you are allowed to, and not allowed to do with your life?

 

You talk about 'our shores' but why are they yours? Simply because you were lucky enough to be born here?

 

And as for EMHDAD's comment 'you are not allowed to have a view like that' - when have I ever said he's not allowed to have that view? Just because I disagree with it doesn't mean I don't think he can have it.

The 'why' being that you should only get out what you have paid in. Just out of curiosity, how many of these asylum seekers are in your area? Here in Kent we are being swamped with them & merely by coincidence the local rags are full of stories of taxi drivers being robbed by men of eastern european appearance, gang fights involving all sorts of knives, everywhere you go there are gangs of them just hanging about 'giving the evil' to everybody who walks by & trying to pull any English bird just so they can stay in the country (trust me about that my other half has been seriously hassled by them in town).

 

Now I don't know about you, but I have 3 kids & this is not the sort of area I want them to grow up in, which is why I am seriously considering packing it all in & moving up north. These are my shores not by luck but as a result of my ancestors (yes I know that we were invaded over the centuries, etc.)

 

Johnny Foreigner has paid sweet f.a. in so why should we, the taxpayers, subsidise his living? Why should our own people who need housing & operations be told they have to wait due to lack of funding when the money is quite clearly there? I noticed you failed to mention my statements about these in your reply - is that because you agree that they are valid points?

Well Unc...I once had to do a dissertation on Blair and New Labour, this was in 1996: a year before they got into power. And myself and a few of the other lads reckoned that, from his manifesto, he was as fascist as they come. You just had to look through the "double-speak" to see it! It was all a bit disconcerting really...Mandelson as Goebbels, the "fat lad" as Goering, etc.
