Special report by Charlie Farnsbarnes...

St. Albans City Res (0) 4 Brentwood (0) 0

Seeby 60,90

Cogger 78

Riley 83

Saints moved 6 points clear tonight of 2nd place Heybridge and 7 clear from 3rd place Canvey.

Not for the first time this season, Saints started sluggishly and the only incident of note in the first half was a flicked header on to Brentwood's right hand post by Ben Cogger following a fine inswinging cross from the left by Jake Attwood.

Coming alive in the second half, Saints gradually began to increase the tempo and on 58 minutes, Matt Jones was unlucky to see his shot from the left come off the Brentwood crossbar. On 60, City finally broke the deadlock, when from Cogger's cross from the left, Chris Seeby rose high to plant a superb header just inside the left hand post. City increased their lead on 78, when Cogger turned in Attwood's cross from the right and 5 minutes later, Amadue Riley scored the goal of the night with a stunning volley into the roof of the net from Scott Atkinson's corner from the right. Seeby completed the scoring on 90 minutes with a simple rebound tap in after the goalie had pulled off a good save from Scott Atkinson.

Team tonight -

Ricky Perks, Jake Attwood, Matt Jones, Amadue Riley, Nick Malham, Tyrone London, Chris Seeby, Jason Coughlan, Ben Cogger (Ali Collins), Scott Atkinson (Jamie Parsons), Adam Smith.

Unused Subs - Sam Parratt, Kenny Hull, Joshua Smith

Must have been putting sugar in your tea when we made 3 really good chances in the first five minutes then

If we had taken an early lead I think we would have gone on to win more comfortably. As it was a bit of panic and frustration crept in (bearing in mind these lads have just experienced a run of 3 games without scoring a goal, a strange feeling this season) which lead to a somewhat patchy performance.

That said it was still a good win and when the league table is updated we will see the effect that this victory and Canvey loosing their first league game to Braintree on Tuesday will have.

Still expected to see a few more down there, for only £2 you get 110% effort and a fair bit of entertainment. What more can we do ???

Next game at home is Wednesday 25th v Dagenham & Redbridge. At their place we faced a few first teamers so it will be interesting to see what side they bring. If you are not busy try to get along and support these boys, your help is always appreciated.

With one result still outstanding the top of the table now looks like -

St Albans City P 19 Pts 42

Heybridge Swifts P 19 Pts 39

Canvey Island P 15 Pts 38

Grays P 20 Pts 35

Dag & Red P 19 Pts 34

So you have to say Canvey look a good bet (anyone tried to place money on this ?) but in our first season in "The Premier Division" and with the youthfulness of the side a top three finish would exceed initial expectations.

Two very important games next Wed / Sat v Dag & Red / Grays respectively and remember we have a Herts County Intermediate Semi Final on March 6th so it could be an exciting end to the season. Good support needed for both those games plus some travelling support for that semi. Maybe an official or two of the club could attend ???

The attendance may of been hindered by a certain match going on a few hundread miles away!

The game you refer to kicked off at 9.20. Midweek reserve games finish around 9.25 (depending on added time, but with our referees its never going to be much).

Any City fan, with an element of local knowledge, would have known that there was time enough to support "The Boys in Blue" and run to The Crown in absolute certainty that you had at least witnessed one decent game of football last night

With the size of the squads at Canvey I can't see that being an issue, in fact its more likely that first team fringe players are wheeled out when their resreves face strong opposition.....well they did it against us, maybe we should take that as a compliment. They put out a very strong team against Bowers and trounced them

15 - 0.

We will fight to the end and see what happens.
