Ryman League - Bishops Stortford 2 Hornchurch 1

It wasn't a classic performance from us although we've played worse and won. The fact is that tonight we were up against a side who were physically stronger than us and were well organised all through the match.

We had hardly touched the ball when Stortford took the lead in the 2nd minute courtesy of a near post header from a corner by Dave Rainford. Danny Kerrigan shot just wide a few minutes later and Bertie Brayley found the back of the net on 16 minutes only for it to be ruled out for offside. In the 34th minute Stortford's James Bunn hit the bar with a well hit shot from just outside the area.

New signing Gavin Holligan replaced Andy Douglas at half time and we attacked from the start, Lee Matthews putting a free kick just over 5 minutes in. A Holligan shot from a corner in the 58th minute was well held by ex-Urchin Micky Desborough in the hosts goal but 10 minutes later Stortford went further ahead when Glen Southam turned beautifully on the edge of the area to get past Ollie Adedeji and slotted the ball into the far corner of the net. The Stortford defence remained solid as we continued to find a way through. A consolation came in the last minute when John Martin was brought down in the area and then stepped up to convert the spot kick.

Line-up:- Gay, Gooding (Keeling 63), Kerrigan, Adedeji, Matthews, Locke (Williams 63), Graham, J Martin, Douglas (Holligan 45), Brayley, McGowan. Subs not used:- Cowley, McCartney (GK).

We certainly was up against a very well organised team, but face facts, we should still be beating teams like them. What's a matter with our lot, they beat much better opposition in Stevenage and Burton, yet can't raise their game to do this lot. I know some people have been critical of our recent performances, but looking back over the last half of dozen or so league games, there aren't many in which we performed well, Hayes and Ford weren't convincing, Billericay and Harrow we were very poor, Kettering didn't go so can't comment, only the Hitchin game, admittedly against p*** poor opposition did we perform reasonably well. Certain players either aren't able to cut it at this level or need a kick up the backside!

Tis a shame that league results haven't been as good as cup results of late, but I don't think we should get too disheartened by yesterdays result. We have slipped to 9th place now, but with our games in hand and all but one of the teams above us, i.e. Canvey, dropping points as well I would still expect Hornchurch to finish in the top three. Whether we won last night or not wouldn’t have had too much of an effect on our chances of winning the league because although it’s still possible, it is most unlikely that Canvey will mess up at this late stage. And let us not forget that we are in the quarters of the FA Trophy and progressing well in the Bryco cup. I don’t think anyone can be blamed if their sites are on the cup run a little more than the league at the moment.

Of course we always want to see the Urchins play well and we all know that there is enough talent in the team to win every game, but football doesn’t work like that and Hornchurch’s emphatic rise through the ranks was bound to slow at some stage. It’s a credit to the club that within two seasons we are where we find ourselves.

It is looking as though I will not be collecting my winnings from the bet I put on at the beginning of the season that Hornchurch would finish top, but provided we make it into the Conference South next season I think it can be considered job done.

I agree that we have come along way and I have given up any hope of winning this league and yes, it is fair to have an eye on the Trophy. However, priority above all else is to finish high enough in this league to insure we are the new conference set up next year. Games in hand count for nothing if you don't win them and the fact they are against lower placed teams isn't a sure sign of picking up maximum points, as in recent games we have struggled against those sorts of team. Our league form does need to improve, I believe we are the second best team in this league by a long way, but we need to prove that point!

True.

Will you be at the Hednesford game? I assume you weren't able to make the Albian game in the end being as you were treating the lady to weekend on the south coast (with the intent of seeing Hx v Bognor were it on).

Lordy Lordy...we NEVER give up...if we were to win the all of our remaining games we would definately squeeze Canvey to almost breaking point....anything is possible.....

as to last night...well I couldn't get there but I'm told by both our guys and BS guys that we were poor in the second half......it happens but we've just gotta keep going and who knows....2nd or 3rd in the league...a cup double...a couple of finals...a semi and a final...whatever...its all there for the taking and we just wanna enjoy it and reflect at the end of the season....

last year was a big learning curve for me and this year is the same...

well done you guys that went last night...GB tells me the support was excellent as always...

Went to the Burton game on Saturday, El Capitano. Cancelled our hotel down in Bognor, shame but needs must. Maybe take the missus for a weekend away in Hednesford instead!

I hope I am proved wrong and we do win the league Unc, but I feel that it is out of our hands to much an extent, as it is Canvey that need a slip and a mighty big one at that! Despite the result it was a good performance by a 50 plus Urchin following. Out sang the home lads, even when they were two-nil up!! Glad Georgie appreciated it, although maybe should have spotted our hints for the introduction of Johnny Keeling a little earlier

I think we were all a bit gutted last night Max & were probably expecting a similar performance to the one we witnessed against Burton on sat....still enjoyed myself & so did my 15yr old nephew, he was an Urchin virgin until tues night & realy enjoyed it.....felt a bit sorry for the Bish S`ford keeper(NOT) especially when trying to line his wall up Dont want to give to much away but the fans that were there last night will know what i mean.

Oh well... upwards & onwards & roll on Hednesford

well for sure the league table never lies stimmo so we'll be able to take stock at the end of the campaign....

I personally think that the team that we've put together this year..(bearing in mind that GB didn't actually start changing last years team until well into this season)...is not perhaps best suited to the premier league with all its vagrancies...ie; wet tuesday nights at BS when the players are still telling each other how wonderful they were against Burton Albion...

our stated aim at the beginning of the season was a top six place and good cup runs...we are well on target to achieve that and hopefully will.....

as to which of us is the better team....well...unless you beat us by three clear goals when next we meet....

we are....
