Billericay 1-1 Purfleet

I normally find that by the time I come to write about a match then I'll have had time to calm down a tad.... Not today.

Item 1) The ref (allegedly - I saw nothing today to suggest he was fit to referee any match at any level). Apparently now you're allowed to go in 2 footed with studs up, or to punch an opponent (in full view of the ref) and that's OK. However, dare to suggest that the ref is inadequate and you get sent off. Tresor Kandol punched Steve Jones. In front of the ref. Who only gave a free kick, and, despite consulting his linesman (why? The ref had the better view) didn't send Kandol off. The Purfleet bench were obviously embarassed as they took Kandol off straight away.

Item 2) The team formerly known as Purfleet.

I can only assume they're on massive bonuses to finish as high up the table as possible. They used every tactic in the book to con the ref. As an example, on one occasion when Billericay had possession Cliff Akurang (the No.11) went down holding his face. The moment the ref blew so he could receive treatment he was on his feet. Ok so Purfcheat gave the ball back but Collis wellied it out of play deep in our half and pressured the throw in so there was no advantage whatsoever. This was by no means an isolated example of their gamesmanship. It would appear from some of the comments their players made in the bar that they reguard this kind of cheating as acceptable in pursuit of a point.... Sad b*st*rds.

Item 3) On to the match. Finally I hear you cry

We played well today. Other than the opening 10 when Thurrock forced a number of corners, and their goal, I can't remember a shot on target for them. Despite us playing almost the entire 2nd half with just 2 recognised defenders on the pitch... (Don't forget Darell Aziz plays centre mid for the ressies!). We hit the woodwork twice (nearing 25 for the season by my reckoning), and had more than a few "half chances". KK was excellent again today up front, Bauckham did well when he came on as well. Tomlinson did well up front then in the 2nd half dropped deep into midfield. Dormer was excellent and thoroughly deserved his goal. Don't think we could have done much more than we did today in fairness, maybe lacking a bit in confidence up front, but with Hockers set to return that should be sorted soon...

Well I don’t think I can put into words how poor Mr Hayto. In have to say that was possibly one of the worst refs I seen in 10 years of following the Ricay. In fairness to him the penalty wasn’t as KK was being fouled from around the half way line. Frankly Purcheats level of gamesmanship was sickening considering the championship is all but won by you know who and theirs no way that they will finish outside an automatic conference 2 place. The number of times they conceded the ref into holding up play for their cheating. Their goal was rather lucky anyway as they got through the defence when Pat Sapleton was hobbling around the pitch and brought off minutes. How the ref didn’t send their play off as he raised his hands and use them to strangle Steve Jones a matter of half dozen yards from the ref and lino with the lino being consulted the player involved wasn’t even given a talking to. Yet for voicing their displeasure or do I mean sheer shock at the absurd decision not to even talk to the player Justin and Andy get sent to the stands albeit around as close to the dugout as the ref was to the incident. Also after a sickening 2-footed tackle on Reeders, which he had to be taken off on a stretcher, did the ref dish out any punishment to the player of course not. This was a number of 2-ftackles to go punished by nothing more than a free kick.

We can take heart from todays game other than the opening exchanges Ricay totally outclassed a side in the top 6 on another their could have been 3 or 4. Tommo hit the bar with the keeper looking like he might be beaten just before the penalty. Steve Jones almost scored after the restart from a cross come shot. Tommo and shot just wide as well in a second half totally dominated by the Ricay Michael Black was so unlucky not to score towards the end of the game when he hit the post with the keeper rooted to the spot. If we are to stay up we need to start getting more 3 point hauls hopefully starting with the Essex derby at Scarley Road next Saturday

Does anyone know how long Sappleton and Redders will be out for as without them will be seriously short at the back

Well like Simon I normally would not come on here until I have calmed down but this may take several days after what I saw on the pitch today but some one pretending to be a referee what an insult lived up to his name for all BTFC supporters Mr Hayto.

If an assessor was at the game today he should be embarrassed to have to write a report about the referee who in my opinion should not be allowed to conduct another game before having a full examination on the rules of the game.

As for Thurrock a very physical side who were lucky to only end the game with 10 men as there striker Kandol should of walked for the challenge on Steve Jones which the referee did nothing about and resulted in Justin and Andy being sent from the bench.

Let's now look at the positives of the game I thought we played good flowing football to the feet today and deserved all 3 points but we know the reason why this did not happen. Dormer took his goal well from a good build up.

Sappleton may be out for a couple of weeks with a hamstring problem but it is hoped that Reddington will be up for selection on Saturday.

If we play like we did today at heybridge we should come away with all 3 points next Saturday.

Just to add in on the injured players:

Sappleton has pulled his hamstring and will almost certainly miss Heybridge. Depending on how bad it is may be back for the Basingstoke game on the 28th.

Redders got a bang on the head - when Colin went out to him he couldn't get any sense out of him (his words not mine ) soI'm not sure how he decided he was injured . either way he should be fit for Saturday.

Davidson got stitches in his brow and his knee was stiff so not sure on when he will be back. Apparently he felt Ok on the pitch, but when he sat down at half time his knee started to stiffen.

Talking to Justin after the game he is looking to strengthen at the back, particularly with Sappers struggling with his injury at present. Watch this space as they say...

Good news on the injury front is that Hockton is well up for his return to the side, I reckon he thinks he'll net plenty of with Tomlinson KK et al laying on the chances.

Having read the posts on this link, I can only say I agree with Andy, COR and Simon. The refs action after the Strangling incident beggers belief. So, it is okay to attack the opposing player AFTER you've elbowed him down into the ground!!!

And the amount of two footed tackles, elbows in the back of the heads...Okay, we all agree that football is a contact sport and there is nothing wrong with a bit of steel and muscle but Thurrock were dirty and cheating with it. And the ref is there to protect players as well ensure that the game is played within the rules. Mr Haylot and his assistants did neither and should not be allowed to officiate another game AT ANY LEVEL!!!

On the team performance, well, I thought we played well considering the amount of football we were allowed to play without a Thurrock player going down crying wolf. KK again is my MOM. My choice of pairing up front with Hockton when he returns fit would be him. With Thommo taking a more midfield role. I thought Leon had a good game as well. He seems to be getting more involved and starting to tackle.

I think the time is now to shore up the defence and tighten the midfield. Any new signings?

The Ref and near side Lino (second Half) were a joke, and the purfs took full advantage.

Added to that, it just didn't go our way today.

We had the ball in the net twice, a penalty given then taken away by the dodgy lino.

We hit the post twice and the bar, and several shots just off target.

All in all a good performance. Just sh1t luck and officials.

i thought Purfleet started well, obv been given a rocket after their debacle on tues, but after they went down to ten, the longer the game went on the greater our domination became.

personally i dont blame purfleet for cheating and wasting time. they were down to 10 for an hour plus and got a draw which was a decent result for them. I lay all the blame at the feet of the referee who was crassly incompetent and unable to control the game in any way.

kk again impressed for me and to me he looks most likely to partner hockers next week and i thought leon had a good game in midfield.

looking at the league table its gonna be a tall order to get away from the bottom four but hopefully we can give ourselves a chance even if it means a last day shoot-out at northwood. i just hope the sight of blackies effort smashing the inside of the post and coming back out doesnt continue to sicken me for months to come!!

You should have hung on longer Simon

The new management team are profesionally putting together a ricay side that firstly will survive and secondly will give excellent basics for future team building

Big and physically strong they dig in and support must not be surprised when opposition teams dig back

On Saturday Thurrock had a reasonable early game control until reduced to 10 players, instead of being able to build on the early control they struggled in coming to terms with going down to 10 men

Although ricay had the higher percentage of pressure for the remainder of the game the Thurrock ten managed fair periods of time where they threatened the 11 man ricay

A muscular game that was half exciting for small periods of time

One thurrock player was out of order in the second half but you give no credit to Thurrock management for immediatley removing him from the game

The ref?? have only seen one half decent ref this term and this man in the first half was as poor as the rest,at least in the second half he lifted his game to piss poor for both sides, nuff said

What was top stuff was spotting all the regular ricay supporters returning to the club and being so very sociable with all and sundry after the game

All that optimism and good feeling at the "new" ricay must be encouraging for long term true supporters

I would agree with that!!! Over the past month the opimism has been great down the club and a lot more people have wanted to hang on after the game for a drink. Thursday nights is getting busier as well and with the ladies getting a darts team up for Wed's nights, the social side of the club is taking off.

Soon we'll all be spending our entire lives down there!!!

i'm afraid we were robbed of 3 points due to the incompetence of the ref. Pabird said we gave no credit to there management for them subbing the bloke who half strangled steve jones, maybe just as a thought then, that if the thurrock management were so good, why then can't they control the ill-discipline & thuggery that seems to run throught-out there side?

The game I saw was physically demanding and made that way by both teams, the big girls blouse crap you mention was an insult to hand bags at 6 paces, no-one hurt and simple over acting by a Thurrock player and the ricay bench

Now why? In the land of the blind the one eyed man is king and the only real thuggery I have seen this term was at Northwood

The players on Saturday would have come off bruised and knackered but fit and able for a mid-week game

Apart from John Purdie! would have thought he'd be banned!

Shame really, if any purfleet players deserved to be banned it was the one who had his hands round steve jones' throat!

Be fair, he probably would just go away and go on the purfleet forum to talk about this, but whats the point - he'll only be talking to himself

Over reaction!!! He elbowed Steve Jones and then went for the throat!!! The rule book states that the first is a bookable offence, the second is violence, or the intent of violence, which is a sending off offence. The 'Ricay bench had reason to question and be upset and fair do's, the way they went about it got them sent off. Doesn't change the fact that the ref and his officials were inept and at times questionable as far as their actions.

As for "big girls blouse crap". Okay, we all agree that football is a physical game and should remain to be but there are limits. For what happened on that pitch, even in Rugby the player would've been punished with at least a "sin bin".

And no one was hurt? Not for want of trying on the Thurrock players part.
