All Years Leaving (LP) by The Stands

released 23 Feb 04

All Years Leaving is an acoustically-flavoured debut album from the Stands that shimmers with harmonies, harmonicas and jingle-jangle guitars and is indebted to all things Dylan, Byrds and Beatles. It's small wonder Noel Gallagher is a fan, although his poor record as a tipster shouldn't deter interest.

Pleasant if not entirely ground-breaking, "All Years Leaving" at times casts singer/songwriter Howie Payne's combo as either a British version of My Morning Jacket or as brethren of one of the very good Liverpool postcode bands ("Outside the Door" could be the Coral on one of their skiffle rolls, "Here She Comes Again" could be the La's, "I Need You" could be "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" by Dylan--if he was from Merseyside).

When the ectoplasmic spectre of Lennon finally emerges through a psychedelic mist on the waltztime "The Big Parade" and the more electrically scabrous "The Way She Does", heads spin and hearts flutter. Perhaps these two tracks offer the Stands their best way forward. --Kevin Maidment

that album got a right slagging off in the X-Ray this month.

And here it is;
"There's always some sneaky bugger who benefits from their mates talents.See Bonehead and Guigsy, Ringo Starr,or indeed Adam Clayton. The Stands are similarly lucky with their mates. Only, while their Coral and Bandit friends continue to produce murky concotions of retro wizardry, "All years leaving's" plays like that homage to Gerry and the Pacemakers not one person on this earth has been waiting for. "I've waited so long" is all gentle strums and nasal-infested harmonies,"outside your door" sounds like a Coral side project where they do their best to sound crap, while the two-step prog of "The Way She Does", a singular ray of light, comes too little, too late. It's obvious The Stands do have a knack for melody and songwriting, but unless they get some ideas of their own, they'll be known for association, not artistry"

Gallagher endorsed Scouse-pop from the highly regarded Stands. Having paid their dues whilst touring tirelessly throughout the UK and showcasing their talents in the legendary Bandwagon club, the Stands are about to hit the big time.

Drenched in the classic melodies adopted by legends like the Band, the Byrds and the Beatles, ‘Here She Comes’ is a tune that, like the Las ‘There She Goes’, sounds utterly timeless.

Liverpool has done it again. Pop perfection.

Won't hear a word against them. Truly brilliant!
