Essex Thamesside Tr - Southend M 3 Hornchurch 0

We took a young side to Southend for this game, augmented with the experience of Keith Rowland, the never-say-die Danny Cowley and the speed of Tony Maynard. Despite this, though, physical strength and experience came through in the end.

We started very brightly and dominated for the first 10-15 minutes. Lance McDowell somehow missed an open goal after 8 minutes, blasting against the underside of the bar from close range. Manor took the lead after 16 minutes. A free kick was floated to the far post, headed back across goal and bundled in by James Hayden with keeper Joe Mullender struggling. After that we never regained our earlier upper hand and the home side went further in front 7 minutes later when Stavros Jones glanced a header in from a corner.

The third goal came on the hour Sami Omar spinning on the edge of the area and firing low into the corner. We played some nice football at times but we just were not strong enough on the day to penetrate the home defence.

Line-up:- Mullender, Macitu, Holloway, Rowland, Williams, Shepherd, Doyle, Cowley, Panzu (Everett 78), Maynard, McDowell. Subs not used:- Tompkins, Boyce, Mitchell, Light.
