MP3 Question

Old hat to most of you folks, I know, but I was well chuffed at lunchtime when I discovered I can copy audio CD's onto my hard drive and save them as MP3's.

 

My question is, how much memory do MP3's take up. It looked to me like it was saying 128kb per second, which would mean the average album would be about 400MB.

 

Does that sound about right, and is that a lot of memory??

Not a lot as far as I know, when you consider that the 40GB i-pod can hold about 40,000 tracks.

That's what I thought, but I really don't have a clue about these things.

Thornsy, if you're right, then one track would be about 1,000KB.

 

My original calculations worked out at about 40,000KB per track.

Zealster, that 128kb/sec may be the transfer rate, not how much disk space is used per second of music.

 

From what I have read, one minute of music take up just less than 1 Mb of disk space.

Zeal, I have an MP3 player that is 128mgs (is that the right symbol?) I dunno. Anyway, it can hold up to about 16 albums (i think)!! And can hold up to 88 floppy disk worth or info. I wouldn't generally go out and buy on, especially when this one costs £128, but it was the one that I won, along with the Robbie Tickets!!!!!

Excellent - yes, I think you're right about the first bit, as it was on the screen whilst I was transferring.

 

So an average album would be about 40MB then.

 

Is a Gigabyte equivalent to 1,000MB??

 

And how many Gigabytes would your average household PC have??

So basically if I want to store a shed-load of albums on hard-drive, I ought to do it with an i-Pod rather than stick them on my PC hard-drive, yes??

I think they generally come with 40 gb (40 x 1024 Mb) hard drives, obviously a lot of that is needed for the operating system and software, etc, but you can get external USB hard drives which hold a lot more to bump up your storage space.

 

Ipod's probably compress the files so they can fit more tracks onto the space they have.

 

At A rough guess you could fit about 500 'albums' into 20 Gb of disk space.

store them on yer Mac, yer mates Mac, tyer works Mac, endless blank CDs,

 

 

 

in fact just stick to vinyl...:-)
