At no point this season have Enfield Town played great football with any consistency (we probably peaked against carshalton). All I can remember people saying is that things must and will get better - they haven't. It seems to me a bit like when EFC won the ryman premier in the early 90's and looked all set for promotion to the conference only for 'financial irregularities' to put a stop to it. It's difficult to motivate a team to do it all over again when they didn't earn promotion the first time. Last season the lads did all that was asked of them by winning the league. The problem is that the team doesn't seem as hungry for the title as they were last year.

 

I really can't see us winning the title or even finishing 2nd this year. So all we can hope for is that the ryman league see the obvious benefits of having us in their re-vamped set-up and invite us up.

 

I for one am certainly less enthusiastic about treking across essex again next season watching more of what has often been poor football this season.

 

Jim needs to completely rebuild. We need a couple of good midfielders - it sounds as if Rids may have played his last, Geraghty is too slow, Quinn a liability and Riley inconsistent. Snowden isn't good enough as a 'deadball specialist' to win a place in the team. He's heen caught out by through balls all season. Jim needs to sort out Ian Cooper's game. When I saw him against Edgware he was full of confidence, scored a great goal and looked like he could beat their defence at will. For months now he's looked anything but confident.

 

Smith out injured has been a huge loss, but it only shows that the squad isn't strong enough.

 

The club needs to grow. It's all very well having shiny new stands and terraces but people don't come to marvel at the facilities. They come to watch good football. If the team isn't performing then we can't expect to draw more people through the turnstiles and increase our voice in the community with a view to getting our own ground.

Your post of 11:16 was one of the most depressing I have read in a long while.

 

I have fully supported the Town and all their works. I realised when the club was formed that things wouldn't be easy and they haven't. Perhaps we were too successful in our first season.

 

I can recall a cartoonist used to sporting cartoons for the Gazette. Jaycee was his name. He depicted the successes of the Enfield 1893 as mountain climbers. I recall the team at the top of a peak looking over from Athenia to Isthmia. In other words there is always another mountain out there to climb and the mountain that we have to climb now is Essexia it is no use looking accross at Rymania until we have climbed our current mountain.

 

We have all the gear - ice picks - the players, warm clothing - the management team from JC to the back room staff and we are the rope as we support the team. We support them to stop them from sliding. At the moment they are sliding is it because our rope is not strong enough. After all the clothing looks alright from where I am standing.

 

There you are Andy how's that for an extended metaphor.

 

I disagree with your view that Riley is inconsistent he gives his all in every game. He is not a great tackler but consistent, he doesn't dribble the ball well but he can collect a ball and lay it off, shield it and mark a man. He is not the fastest in the world and sometimes his stamina seems lacking but he is often the unsung hero. He made some magnificent passes on Tuesday which the forwards did not seem to respond to. Perhaps he doesn't do it on the bar side but he does on the housing side. Just look at the number of times that he has been the last defender and got his tackle in. Even against Abbey when, perhaps he should have been sent off, he was there to take the player out when there was no other.

 

The rest of your comments appear about right as regards the ice picks.
