Ampthill Town 1-1 AFC Welwyn - Spartan South Midlands League Division 1
A cracking game involving Division 2 leaders New Bradwell St Peter on Tuesday was followed by an absolutely diabolical encounter with their Division 1 counterparts today. Welwyn may be likely to achieve a second successive promotion but they won no friends here, diving, moaning and yelping at the ref on the pitch, bellowing the full gamut of technical terms from eff to Jeff on the bench.
On a bright afternoon at Ampthill Great Park the solitary moment of quality was the home side’s opener after about half an hour, in which their forward let the ball fly over his shoulder before swivelling to hammer in a left-foot volley. Welwyn’s equaliser came early in the second half, scrambled in from close range when they were down to 10 players due to a sin-binning, because of course it did.
Small mercies they didn’t go on to win the game because at times that felt inevitable - not due to any positive characteristics but somehow just because football is like that. Have rarely seen a crowd depart a ground more quickly on hearing the final whistle. Wretched.
