Enfield Town 2-0 Welling United

Recommended Posts

Bates best player on the pitch.   Deserved MoM.

Caused issues for Welling all night and 2 assists...think he set up Chuks too.

Some fans on here writing him off before he d kicked a ball.🤔

Much better few results than the experts predicted and not sure Welling would have scored before midnight.

Well played Town.

We managed that pretty well, a nicely taken goal from Chukwu after he was slipped in by Bates, which couldn't have come at a better time, as we were inviting pressure and couldn't get out of our half. After that, Welling largely ran out of ideas, but huge credit has to go to us for the defensive shift we put in. Yes we let them have a lot of the ball, but we looked organised and hard to break down and they didn't really have a clear cut chance in the second half other than a couple of scrambles from set pieces.

Bates was given MoM, and looks a very tidy player, but I'd also call out all 3 centre backs and Stallard for their defensive work. That said, every player including the subs put in an enormous effort to get us over the line - well done Town 👏

Churlish I know...but a lovely smug feeling driving back to Bexley (the London Borough of which contains Welling) having just seen the Wings off 2-0! 🤭🤭🤭

GOOOOEEERN TOWN ✊🏻✊🏻✊🏻

It was clear early on that the Welling back 4 had little faith in their own GK and we took full advantage. As others have said, Bates caused problems with every corner he took, putting the ball invitingly into the 6-yard box each time. First half it felt like a matter of time before we would score from one of our corners and so it proved, Sam Youngs once again managing to find a little space in the penalty area and head home practically unchallenged. No more than we deserved, we played very well in the first half and could have scored a couple more from corners, one header in particular looking like it was in until a last ditch goal line clearance. I was particularly impressed with Chukwu and Hisham up front, both of whom gave the Welling back 4 a torrid time all night. If it wasn't for the Welling no. 5 (who played well for them), we would have scored more.

We did sit back a little for the first 10-15 minutes of the second half and weathered some pressure, though I can't recall any clear cut chances for Welling. Our second goal was timely and came after a lovely through ball from Bates which Chukwu ran onto and hit a clever cross-goal shot which rolled into the far corner. Very well taken and will give him a real confidence boost. He needs a run of games now, as does Hisham - they have the makings of a good front two who will tire out opposition defences which (hopefully) Hutchinson can take advantage of when he comes on later in the game (which seems to be the pattern now).

3 wins on the trot and 3 clean sheets - can't ask for more. Let's take that confidence onto Chesham on Saturday.

The Welling manager was on the money and it wasn't hard for any spectator to see our tactics - hit the ball over the top and see what happens. It wasn't pretty, but its time for a bit of pragmatism. Recent performances have shown that our defence has improved - with any combination of Thompson, Hawkins, Parcell, Benjamin or Payne in the back three. We now also have some options at wing-back with Leonard, Peake, Stallard or Oyenuga. There are even options up front with Chukwu, Kasimu, Hutchinson and RBR. I'm not suddenly converted to thinking that we have a world-beating strike-force, but there is no doubting their effort - and with that effort came the occasional chance, the odd corner and even a free-kick or two. Jack Bates' delivery was exceptional - 2 assists and the MoM wasn't bad for a home debut. If we can get the points we need then I will happily accept this style of play. 15 games remaining and we are at least in with a shout. The predicted table reckons we'll only get another 4 points. I fancy us to get a few more, but with some very tough fixtures ahead we're going to have to continue the improvement. At this stage I suspect St Albans will come through strong at the end, but its a funny old game!
