A la recherche du temps perdu

The Winter edition of "Groundtastic" magazine has a feature on the Dolphin Stadium.

My copy arrived today. There is also some material about the Centre Stadium from the brief Slough United period. It seems a very decent overview and I haven't clocked any major errors, but maybe a couple of "omissions".

I had always understood that, before selling the then Dolphin Stadium to Clapton Stadiums in 1936, George Bennett had offered it to the then Slough FC but they had declined to buy it-because the club was still dealing with the aftermath of having many of its players declared professionals.

The second concerns the club's departure from the Dolphin. The article suggests that this was probably inevitable following the GRA's acquisition of the stadium but does not go into detail. One of my programmes from the late 60's/early 70's includes a copy of a letter from the club applying to join the Isthmian League which states that it had recently signed a new 25 year lease to continue at the ground. It was, if I recall matters correctly, the owners' wish to widen the dog track to accommodate 8 "lanes", thus encroaching on the available playing surface, which led to the club effectively being evicted from the site.

Nostalgia aside for a moment, what a stonking win that was last night.
