Some questions

Recommended Posts

I posted this on a thread but I didn’t want it to get lost in it because I’m interested in people’s thoughts about it.

As I’m just a regular going fan every week, trying to make the atmosphere louder to get behind the team and I’m not in member meetings or whatever happens closely with some of the fans and the board, and I’m guessing some of us on here are closer to what’s going on behind the scenes, I don’t think I can truly understand what the board is going through at this current moment in time with revenue, to keep it more sustainable. Does anyone know what’s been suggested to people higher to make it a little bit easier on Gavin with budget issues?

And I hate to keep going on about Wyllie - he’s gone and on to better things but was the sale of him needed to progress as a club or was it due to the fact we felt like we was holding him back to go and play in the football league? Yes, he played a massive part in us going up of course, but whether we like it or not he has played a massive part in us going straight back down, and I feel like the least he owed to us for really putting him on the map was just another season or even half a season in the NLS, to keep us stable in this level. Maybe I am looking at this selfishly but I’d like to get other people’s views on that also.

Sorry, but there cannot be any criticism of Marcus for the manner and timing of his departure. He left to play full-time in the football league. He owed ETFC absolutely nothing. In fact, you could say that by signing a contract he had more than repaid the opportunities the club gave him. It was a mutually-beneficial relationship. By way of comparison perhaps I can tell you about what happened to Needham Market striker, Sam Newson, in 2011. This was the season ETFC won promotion against Needham Market via the play-offs. Newson had been absolutely prolific that season with scouts coming from far and wide to watch him. He was invited, during the season, for a 4-day trial with Gillingham. This was Newson's big break. Unfortunately he injured his knee the week before he was due to go on trial (https://www.eadt.co.uk/sport/21768538.sam-newsons-trial-gillingham-wrecked-injury/), missed the opportunity and the prospect of a career as a full-time footballer died a death. So, my point is: Marcus could not turn his opportunity down. Equally, the Club couldn't force him to stay. So, no - he did not owe us another season in the NLS.

That’s fair, and I didn’t actually know about that story with that Needham striker.

I agree with your point, that if you don’t take the opportunities given to you then anything could happen and god forbid that happens to Marcus as he moves on. I guess I was looking at it selfishly thinking that he could have saved our season in Enfield then moving up to the football league and I hope he does very well at Gillingham.
