Club Crests (& identities)

I've read with some interest (and bewilderment) about the news recently announced by Cambridge United that, following a consultation period, they have announced a new Club Identity (and sub-identities). Along with this comes a new club crest. They call it a "A modern evolution of previous crests".

This got me thinking about other clubs that have changed crest, in particular Yeovil Town this summer. What is it with this modern trend to ditch perfectly good crests and replace them with dumbed down modern versions? Looking through the crests of clubs from Premier League down to NLS level, it struck me just how many crests follow the same basic design, and also how rare badges featuring (or based upon) the town or city's coat-of-arms is.

Our new owners are making many changes and putting their mark upon things. My (hypothetical, for the avoidance of doubt) question is this: if changing the club crest were to be proposed, how well would it/should it be received?

Let’s be honest our club crest is pretty bland and boring and I for one would not oppose a new modern design.

Presumably most if not all crests contain things that represent the town through the years.

As long as a new crest design still contains these elements I see no reason for not considering an updated design.

If we were to ditch the current coat-of-arms logo & moto badge and go down this route, what would be on a new modern badge?

I've gone through 80 Things Slough Gave The World, and can't find anything suitable for a football club logo (though I did like the idea of Oddjob's hat).

As far as I'm concerned, Slough is iconic for the Trading Estate, Sewage Works, Mars Bar Factory, a massive Tescos, John Betjeman, David Brent and Tracey Ullman🤣😂😁; though all these would certainly be more imaginative than what Yeovil did with theirs, which was to simply stick a football in the middle.
