Chatham FA Cup

Recommended Posts

Odd one! Was expecting a much tougher test today but in the end it was very comfortable. We played ok but certainly no where near our best but they weren’t great and missed a host of chances. But great to be in the draw and hopefully a home tie now with the 1st round within sniffing distance.

In after match discussions about yesterday's game  with "Bonjour", one very interesting ( I think) topic came up.

Where did all the Chatham fans go to ?

Going to the game yesterday I was hoping the crowd might approach 2,000.

I know that their local league club Gillingham were at home in a top of the table clash with Barrow, but all four of Chatham's previous home Isthmian Premier League

matches attendances were above 1,000.

To be precise they were 1,567, 1,458, 1,708 and 1,089, all against teams who would have brought only a handful of away supporters with them.

On a nice, sunny  Saturday afternoon, with the chance to get to further in the FA Cup than Chatham I would guess normally manage, the crowd was given as 702.

Being generous you could say of these 500 were Chatham fans.

Normally if a crowd for a game when the gate is split 50/50 is announced as greatly less than what normally attends that venue, dodgy accounting ( a la Kings Lynn) is the reason.

I find it difficult to gauge attendances at away grounds, but I would definitely have said there was less than a 1,000 there yesterday, and "Bernie Gogan"  accurately as it turned out guessed at 700, so  the stated 702 attendance seems quite feasible..

It was disappointing all these other Chatham "supporters"  disappeared yesterday

Can only guess that the fans that increase their gates to a 1,000+ go to watch Gillingham and the lure of a top of the table clash outweighed watching Chatham. Interesting to see what their gates were like when they were previously both at home.

Gillingham's  attendance yesterday for their top of the table clash was 7,166, but that isn't a massive increase on their previous league gates this season which have been 7,037, 6,954 & 6,660.

I know Chatham had a good season last term, and as far I've been able to find out  they then  averaged 1,400 at home, but even with a clash yesterday with a  (for them I guess) tempting Gillingham home fixture, it still seems a very big drop off.

I guess I'll put it down to them realising that they were facing the mighty Rebels, and didn't want to waste their money watching an almost guaranteed Chatham defeat !
