v Eastbourne Borough

A draw was a fair result?

Not according to their ungracious managers post match comments.

According to him Slough were never in the game and they should have scored 4 goals

Sloughs only chances were at the end from set pieces and we put 11 players behind the ball.

Flippin'n heck, I've been thinking Eastbourne were a very friendly, decent club to visit yesterday, and now their manager has come out with his totally biased and one-eyed comments to make me doubt my judgement.

As you say rebelbrewer, their match report is a much more accurate description of the game that I saw.

I watched the short interview with their manager and he came across as arrogant. Seemed a little bitter and not the type to praise the opposition.

I wasn't intending to write a longish post about yesterday's game, but looking out the window and seeing the rain come down, and the forecast for today not showing any improvement, I might as well write one.
Definitely not sure about you, but it keeps me entertained, but then I'm easily pleased.
Windsor Rebel, you may as well stop reading now ! 😄
We met up as per normal at St. Joe's, and once the now usual problem of people getting on the coach before giving their money to Geoff or Jean was resolved, we set off for the south coast.
The day was grey and overcast, but at least dry.
We set off heading towards the M4.
We went past St. Bernard's Convent, and I was amazed to see massive queue's of people lining the streets in both directions leading to the school gates.
I have no idea what was going on there this time, but normally whenever I go past the Girls Convent School it always  brings back memories  of my adolescent, teenage years.
I don't know what you lot are thinking about, but I'd just like to point out that my sister went there !
It seemed the further the slow progress we made along the M25, the worse the weather became.
For a lot of the first hour of our journey, gloomy skies and heavy rain accompanied us.
Then ,as we got closer to our destination, our progress improved and the skies lightened, and by the time  we arrived at Eastbourne it was a glorious summer's day.
Before we left I had seen that the weather forecast for Eastbourne was for it to be a lovely day, and had planned when we got there to walk down to see the sea, rather than hang around the stadium for an hour and a half waiting for the match to begin.
Because of the delay's on the motorway that we had had to contend with, we arrived at Eastbourne later than I'd hoped, and I opted to just walk down to the marina.
It was lovely.
Lots of boats moored up, with nice little cafe's/restaurant's around the sides of the quay.
The water was very clear, with big fish so close to the side of the walkway that I could easily have just knelt down and scooped them up without needing any fishing equipment or net.
Tempting as it was to just buy an ice cream or some fish and chips and spend the rest of the afternoon there, I knew Scotty and the boys needed supporting, so I left and headed back to the ground.
When I got there I went into their club shop, and bought a match programme from the very cheerful and friendly lady behind the counter.
I wasn't able to get a programme for our Cup match against Chichester on Tuesday.
I was told that we had only printed 53, and they sold out long before I tried to buy one.
Only 53 ? !
That's not good Slough.
I know we weren't expecting a big gate on Tuesday, but I'd expect more than 53 to be printed.
I see one is available to buy on Ebay, for bids starting at £3.99 PLUS £3 postage.
Sorry, but I ain't spending £7 for a copy.
The game started, and I was very pleased to see Eastbourne, when they got an early goal kick, have FOUR defenders stretched out across the pitch six yards from their goal line.
I thought they were intending to play that dangerous game of playing out from the back in their own penalty area, but then the goalie ran up and smashed it upfield to  my surprise.
I felt they did play it out from the back a lot of the game, but in a much more sensible way, starting much further up the pitch.
Eastbourne had a lot of the ball, and we seemed quite happy to let them have it, but on a quick attack down our right Kweku put in a superb cross and John Gilbert running in just got his toe to the ball to turn it into the net.
Very unfortunately Josh, who had started the game well playing out of position on the left, sustained an injury and had to leave the field.
Scotty got booked when Eastbourne were in danger of launching a quick breakaway.
Yeah, it was a booking but I thought the Eastbourne bloke made a meal of it.
I thought Scotty just sort of "barged" him over, whereas the Eastbourne fans beside me reacted as though their player had been scythed down in a reckless assault.
We did have a laugh about our differing viewpoints soon after.
The Eastbourne fans ( not their manager) seemed a decent lot.
Typically, just before the half time whistle ,Eastbourne attacked down our left where Josh would have been, and Jeanmal just couldn't reach the ball passed inside him to the touchline and a good cross into our area was smashed into the net for the equaliser.
At least it wasn't George Alexander who scored it.
Half time came and went, and the second half was delayed because some repair work apparently was required on both mobile goals.
It seems there were gaps where the netting should have been attached to the framework of the goals.
Shouldn't that have been spotted before the match kicked off ?
So now it's three problems with these moveable goals in as many weeks !
Second half Eastbourne had a lot of the ball again.
The last 15/20 minutes though were more or less end to end, with us failing to convert ( quite often by good, desperate Eastbourne defending)  numerous chances and Eastbourne also missing some great opportunities to score.
A point away to a full time team second in the table was a  great result, and a point I think we deserved for our battling performance.
The journey home was, as seems normally the case, a lot quicker and easier than the journey down.
I got into my car at St. Joe's for the journey home, and put the radio on to listen to 5-Live's 606 programme.
To be honest I'm not that bothered about the Premier League, and 606 is a bit boring now compared to how it was when Danny Baker started it many years ago, but I put it on anyway.
I had almost reached home when this West Ham fan started talking about keeping an eye out for Chatham Town in the FA Cup.
We weren't mentioned, but next week is a very important( and tough) match.
Scotty and the boys, please don't get beat by Chatham.
Yes, I know it's the FA Cup and we all know the reasons why progress in this competition is so important.
But it's more than that to me.
Next week it's personal.
My wife was born and raised in Chatham, and although she is not a great football fan she knows how to press my buttons and if Chatham beat us, she will never let me forget it.

Excuse me Mr but St. Bernard’s Convent certainly isn’t a girls school anymore as I went there and that was over 30 years ago! (Quickly checks my gender label…)

I can assure you when I was a teenager and my sister went there in the 70's, it was definitely a girl's only school !  😄

I did say anymore. I was part of the first set of lucky lads to be amongst all those girls and I bet the school regret their decision to this day!!!

I was amongst the 4th year of boys allowed in, absolutely loved that school but the Nun’s did not like the fact that boys went there at all!

Hello HR always like reading  your post you missed us passing the blacked out Nottingham Forest well painted red players coach as they play today🤩…                                  About the West Ham supporter talking about Chatham I was in the clubhouse watching the hammers get well beaten by Chelsea I am surprised he was not talking about there supporters', like all big clubs so called supporters it is amazing to see them all leave in droves when losing this is the time when the team need their support. In 57 years i have never left the ground early what ever the score line is the team needs the support from start to end of a game.

I can not be bothered listening to opposition managers Whinging,

RR text me about what he was saying just a manager not happy that his team did not score with chances created that's not Slough's problem as we were unlucky with chances we created as well' a draw was a fair result especially after Josh going of injured.

If I may tiptoe in on your forum....

Thanks so much, Holyport Rebel, for your very engaging account of Rebels' day at the seaside. Most enjoyable "fan's view" that I've read for ages!

Not to disagree that Borough's manager came across as less than generous, but in defence of managers generally, we reporters often have to collar them within literally ten minutes of the final whistle (I was writing the NLP report and I needed instant quotes from both managers.) And emotions can still be running a bit high!  Adam Murray is actually far from a serial mseryguts - he's witty, articulate and in love with the game, and probably one of the best three managers I've ever worked with (in about sixty years!). And of course passionate for his own team - and at that moment also more cross with his own strikers who could have put the game to bed, than with the opposition!

Scotty also was good enough to give me a minute of his instant wisdom and was probably, on balance, the happier manager. So definitely no whinges! Everyone on the circuit knows SD as one of the good guys, and yours is a lovely club which - like Borough, I hope - one which never makes enemies.  Best of luck for the season.

Well that's 2 Kevs corresponding then!

Just to say I thought we shaded the first half, but the second half was pretty much backs to the wall until the last 10 minutes or so during which Eastbourne's goalie made 5/6 top saves including 3 in one sequence, plus a number of timely blocks by defenders. I am biased of course, and this is our forum after all!

I was happy with a point against a full time side, which no doubt has a very healthy budget. I guess the owners have deep pockets, although at £6.50 a pint no doubt we as supporters are contributing to it.

I don't mind fans/reporters of the opposition coming on here with their comments if they say nice things about my ramblings ! :thumbsup(2):

I guess like other football fans who travel to away grounds, I get a "vibe" about clubs we visit, and my normal reaction to going to a game at Eastbourne is always positive.

Pleasant ground, nice facilities and decent fans.

That's why I was especially disappointed to hear the after match comments from the Eastbourne manager.

They left a sour taste in the mouth which I felt was unwarranted.

Following your staunch defence of the Eastbourne manager I'm prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt, but I shall be closely listening to what he comes out with when we play them back at our place in January  !

Good Luck for the rest of the season, apart from any time that our interest's may clash !

It's obviously very raw straight after a game if a manager doesn't get the result he wanted and things are sometimes said in the heat of the moment that they wouldn't say a few hours later.

All I can say is the distraught and pain of only getting a point at home against a part time club must have also clouded his memory and judgement if he thinks Slough were never in the game and just defended with 11 men behind the ball.

I was standing next to the gantry and saw guys go up the ladder🤩😡

As far as I can tell from their website and forum they have published no highlights this season win, lose or draw.

They did regular highlights last season but this season it looks like they've only done one game so far which was against Dorking with no match commentary.

Really not sure what they're playing at but it looks like they might only be doing selective games.

Their forum suggests they're not expecting highlights, cost-cutting, loss of expertise. It's not about the result anyway.
