Bath City v Enfield Town

Tally Ho

Not sure how i feel… three points is obviously massive but after listening to the game i’m not sure it fills me with confidence..  Mensah is going to be a huge signing and Forster sounded like MOM again but can we honestly set up like this and get away with it ???

Just watched Gav's interview and it was great to hear that he could see an improvement in the defence and is still working hard to bring in forwards. A clean sheet will help to lift the spirits of the players and if it was Rhys Forster who dislocated his finger on Thursday and not RBR then that's really quite impressive to be playing today and pulling off some crucial saves. To me that's a sign that the players are giving their all and that's all we can ask of them. Let's hope we can have more of the same in terms of improvement and dedication next week and get some more points!

Well done. Terrific win. Agree with the comment that we have played the heavy hitters. Six of the top seven in the table have beaten us. Now it’s time to play some of the more beatable teams. Hopefully. Waking up in Australia just got better.

Agreed, 4 pages when we lose in the Cup, when we win nobody has anything to say.

I'm not able to go as much this season unfortunately, but realise our defence were quite busy without them causing us a great deal of trouble.

Clean sheet is always welcome and again Rhys seems to have played well, despite an apparent dislocated finger which would make his performance all the more impressive.     On the forum it said that RBR hardly got a touch in the first 20 minutes and quite worrying also that he only got time due to the fact we have 2 less strikers and Harry was not there.

Dylan seems to have been involved in assisting the goal so good to see him involved again as we need all the attacking options again.   Not sure who the "non league forward" was who injured himself in training but hopefully we'll have some incoming players in the next week or two although that said doesn't matter who we have up front if we cant get them some quality service.

Anyone else from here actually go or able to offer more on our performance?

It’s hard to have an opinion without seeing the game… all i have to go on is the commentary…. obviously it’s a fantastic 3 points but you can’t expect people to comment on team selection… set up… tactics or anything else having not seen it….. I thought the commentators were great… a real balanced view… but the listening especially the first half was painful…. Arteta tried to do a Gavin tonight but just failed…..

So glad I managed to get to this one!

Maybe not one for the purists, and we were definitely second best for the first half, especially the first part where we looked hurried, and were hitting high and fairly aimless balls up to RBR which Bath's centre-backs must have been delighted with, but we hung in there and grew into the game. Being up the other end, I couldn't comment on their offside goal, but they did get a lucky break in the build up, which got them behind our defence and led to a quality ball in and a sharp finish. Very glad that was ruled out, as going a goal behind so early would have really sapped our belief. I think that we have to approach games by being defensively sound as a starting point, and I really like us being a back 5 without the ball and it gives us a little more insurance and cover. We also have two quite natural wing backs in Mills and Dylan, who can both defend, but also have the energy to get up the pitch and support when we do get possession. Mensah was called out by Gavin in his interview, however I thought Parcell was up there as a MoM contender - he was positionally excellent, won his headers and looked to get the ball down and find a yellow shirt when the opportunity arose.

It wasn't pretty at times, and I do wish that we could have a little more quality on the ball, and retain possession more comfortably when there was time and space to do so, but in the most part we were clearing our lines, and looking to hit channels for the forwards to run into to make something happen (without much success). One of the exceptions to this was Leshabela, who does have the quality and awareness to put his foot on the ball and pick a pass when it's on. Unlike against Maidstone, there was a little more space to do this, and he showed at times what a good player he can be for us by taking a touch and retaining and building possession. I'm not sure Youngs is a natural CM as part of a two, but he worked hard and competed all game. If we can make that extra pass to work a better position, we'd be able to get the ball to our forwards in more threatening areas, and the wide two of Peake and Leonard can make things happen with their pace and trickery if they do get the ball to feet against their full back. Bath had a lot of the ball, and moved it around nicely at the back, without really getting behind us much, or looking that threatening, especially as the game went on.

I've just watched the highlights, and even though I was behind the goal, I didn't remember the header from Leonard being as good as it was - in spite of Dylan's fantastic run and cross, he still had a lot to do to direct it into the far corner away from the keeper. Definitely a perfect smash-and-grab goal, but excellent build up (involving RBR too), but it just shows that if we can keep it solid and compact for 90 minutes, we will make one or two chances, and maybe just take one with a bit of quality like that. After the goal, I thought we grew into the game, and managed it very well - we defended our box, dealt with headers and high balls and were organised enough to ensure that Bath rarely troubled us. I can't remember them getting behind us once after the goal, and they were restricted to long range efforts, one of which Rhys tipped over very well, but generally we looked defensively sound, and I can see why Gavin was so happy in his interview about this. If we'd put in this type of orgasnised defensive performance in one or two other tight games this season, we might have a few more points to show for it. I was a little surprised to see Rhys leading the MoM poll, as apart from two saves, and a couple of punches and claims, he didn't have that much to do, and this is a credit to all of the players in front of him - it certainly wasn't a case of them constantly getting one-on-one and him pulling off save after save to keep us in it.

The final whistle was very welcome, and you could see what it meant to the players, who had just put in a monumental shift, to secure the points. The other thing to call out is that I was super impressed with the setup at Bath, a lovely ground with bags of character and great views from all parts. Their fans that I spoke with were really nice, encouraging, and interested in our supporters owned model, and are looking forward to the return game at the QE2. All in all a fantastic day out, some top quality beer consumed, and a happy ride back to London on the train with 3 points in the bag. Going forwards, I still think we're really up against it in this league, but that type of performance shows what is possible when all the players switch on defensively and work their socks off. Add a little more quality and strength in certain areas (as much as RBR worked hard, we're clearly very light up front) and you never know what might happen. I'm certainly a tiny bit more optimistic now than I was after Maidstone.

Wasn't there .. but listened to commentary from 30mins or so ..

Really really pleased for everyone esp. Gavin

Whilst maybe not a classic we stuck to a plan, Gav was flexible in the formation - and as per his interview is still working on bringing in new players - cant ask any more than that!

Pleased for Mensah - despite the 2 mistakes on his debut against Maidstone I thought he was the sort of player we need - and pleased Dylan and Bernie came in and played their part .. Bernie was such a key part to our promotion challenge last year ..

Not being a doctor what are the implications of Rhys having a disclocated finger -will he need to have some time out? Does he continue to play but wont that stop it healing?

Our run of fixtures now looks better ... 5 of our next 6 fixtures are against teams `17th and below - including 2 of the 3 below us in Aveley and Weymouth (who we really need to beat)- I think we'll know a lot more about our chances of survival after this run ..  if we can get our record up to or close to a point a game by the end of it then we'll be doing well!

Feel a lot more confident after this ...

Re Rhys' finger; I think it's just a matter of waiting for the swelling to go down. He showed us on Saturday, and it looked pretty good. I think he also mentioned a small fracture however, which might be a bigger problem. Seven days' test should sort it - I hope!

Good news that his finger doesn't seem too bad and hopefully heals quickly. The team needs those hands in good working order!! I dare say injuries like that are reasonably common for keepers but fair play to him for not taking any time out.
