v Aveley (A)

Recommended Posts

48 hours after Hornchurch we're off to Essex, they've had a tough start to the season and will be looking to kick into gear today I'm sure. Last season the Rebels managed to do the double with a pair of 2-0 wins despite the fact Aveley managed a play-off spot finish in the end.

Aveley's first four:

10/8 Welling Utd (A) - 1-0 defeat

17/8 Tonbridge Angels (H) - 2-2

19/8 Hemel Hempstead (H) - 1-0 defeat

24/8 Eastbourne Borough (A) - 2-1 defeat

Fantastic win and solid performance. Yes Aveley weren’t great but maybe we had something to do with that. Great to see the goals are being spread around and not too reliant on one or two players. Naturally the more we win the expectations rise, so although some may think it’s a home banker v Weymouth, if we don’t give 100% we’ll come unstuck. I hope the club (and us fans by dragging along others) can do all it can to drum up a 1,000+ crowd as the players and management deserve it. By the way who is the tall chap with longish hair in the dugout and what’s his role?

Do we dare to dream of another win & the possibility of going top?

It would be interesting to see what the attendance would be on Saturday if it does happen.

Again at this time of year and with the weather being decent attendances could be lower than expected.

I would say we currently have a core home attendance of 750-800 without special offers (or special days, opening day, Bank Holidays, Non League Day, and the big clubs visiting - Torquay & Maidstone) and will likely get a 20% boost because of the good start to the season….. so I am predicting 900+, and possibly close to 1,000.

I'm not sure about you, but I am certainly going to enjoy the next few days knowing that Slough are looking down from top spot on the other 23 teams in the league.

Yes I realise it is only after 5 games.

No, I don't expect us to stay there.

Before the season started I was hoping that Slough would enjoy a season free from any relegation worries.

Having seen every game so far I feel that that target will be achieved.

It is very satisfying reading a lot of other Nat League South teams fans forums, and learning of their fans dismay and concerns about how their teams are performing so far.

As we know all too well from last season though, where you are at the start of the season doesn't indicate where you will be come season's end !

On paper, it looks like another three points is there for the taking on Saturday.

Top v bottom, and the bottom team have lost all 5 games and only scored two goals.

Our unbeaten home record will reach a whole year if Weymouth don't beat us.

It has all the makings of a massive banana skin result.

I would love to beat Weymouth on Saturday, continue our unbeaten home run and stay top of the table for another couple of days at least.

Every game though in this league is a battle.

Even that 6-1 win at Enfield had me at times thinking that we were going to be in a real fight to get any points from the match.

Yesterday's 3-0 away win at Aveley was a great result.

We now have 12 points from  the 15 so far available.

As Scott has said, the quicker we can get another 40 points or so the better.

I'm not expecting us to get to 50 odd points and still being top of the table, but then I'm not expecting us to get to 50 odd points and being in the relegation zone.

This could be a very interesting and entertaining season.

Fantastic credit to Scott for assembling what looks like a very robust, resilient and exciting to watch  squad of players.

The months ahead will bring no doubt many ups and downs,

I'm very much looking forward to seeing how it all pans out.

Hopefully you're right Curtis.

But it's the last weekend of the kids summer hols and with good weather predicted it could affect the attendance.

Lets all enjoy the highs while we can because there's no doubt we'll have some lows as the season progresses.

Scrutinising the games we've played so far, Hornchurch apart, I'd say they'll all be lower half teams so we've got all the so called 'big sides' to play.

Either way with the 'front foot' squad Scott's assembled it should be an exciting season we can all look forward to.

A few words about the Aveley club.

In stark contrast to last season at their place when that game followed the trouble at our home game with Farnborough (caused by Farnborough "fans" not ours), the stewarding was over bearing and unnecessarily hostile to some of us peaceable older supporters, this season it was extremely friendly, even supplying a bin for Warren to bash and cheerlead behind the goal. I wasn't expecting this at all!

The improvements to their ground were impressive, and give a pointer to how we can improve our own without detracting from its uniformity and improving the viewing experience for spectators.

It's a shame they can't attract larger crowds. the 500+ crowd yesterday included circa 200 from Slough.

All in all a pleasant matchday experience and perhaps the 3-0 win had something to do with that of course!

The only ground where I had ever been part of a record attendance (along with I guess some others on this forum) and they sold the it!

The only highlights so far, although you'd be lucky to see our goals viewed from the Aveley end. Pre match predictions were interesting. The 2 ladies almost had it spot on!

Still waiting for the Enfield highlights..................

It's a pity their Twitter/X feed had to be so partisan:

I know that the Rebels Radio commentators weren't convinced by the decision for our penalty, but I wasn't there so can anybody comment on whether or not these comments were justified?
