Truro v Town

Tally Ho

Without seeing the game it is difficult to make any observations.

However, it does seem that we are lacking a strong leader, especially in defence. Having gone in front for  a second away game we have again allowed a cluster of goals around the halfway stage of the game. When one looks at the results over the whole of the league most are very tight and only a gaol or two different. One must conclude that our defence either finding it hard to stick to the discipline and resilience required at this level or just lacking the ability in this respect. Some hard decisions will have to be made soon.

I feel some sympathy for Gavin and his management team if this is the case. Perhaps he will have to make changes and consider looking for players on the way up and not to many on their way down. Think of Marcus and what he achieved!!!!

Four days and I've seen 11 goals in ETFC games! Granted, we've only scored 2 of 'em!

This team is currently not good enough to survive in this league. Town are weaker than last year - mainly because of the loss of Marcus. Truro were nothing special, but they have a striker who scored two of the four chances he had. Meanwhile, we started with Folivi up front on his own. From what I've seen, Folivi cannot hold the ball up and isn't particularly quick! We are crying out for a physical striker who can play with his back to goal (Harry Ottaway / Jake Cass / Ivan Toney). Despite strong winds behind us we struggled to fashion many good chances with long balls regularly overhit by Joe Payne and Rhys. I think we had 3 shots on goal in the first half (of which 1 was scored by Folivi). Folivi's goal was well taken, but the way in which the Truro defence backed off showed that they were there for the taking.

Defensively we are poor. But for a great save by Rhys, Truro would've been 1 up within the first 2 minutes. There were a couple of other important saves in the first half which saw us go in ahead. The partnership of Tanner and Nembhard doesn't yet inspire confidence. I'm hoping that the likes of Solomon and Adjei-Hersey can add some quality and tenacity to our back line.

Lennon Peake showed some nice touches and looked our most inventive player in the first half. Oyenuga looked our best defender.

This was the kind of game we needed to take at least a point from. The fact that we didn't shows that we are currently out of our depth.

An accurate summary, TCC.

It was a game of two halves. I thought we played OK in the first half. The conditions (very windy) meant the ball had to be kept on the deck. We did so and built patiently from the back and the midfield, admittedly without really threatening. Truro had a couple of chances which Rhys was equal to. Then, somewhat unexpectedly, Folivi opened the scoring with a terrific shot from distance which flew into the top right hand corner. We haven’t scored many goals so far but the goals against Torquay, Slough and now Truro have all been blinders! So 0-1 up at half time, but we knew the second half would be testing given the change of ends (and wind).

That made it all the more disappointing to concede the equaliser so early. It was a good striker’s finish but we could have defended better to stop the ball reaching their guy in the first place. Worse was to follow shortly thereafter, Truro’s second coming from a free header after a routine long cross. That was a bad goal, felt like a giveaway and set ringing the same alarm bells that haven’t had much of a rest since the Slough game. We had some decent spells of possession in the second half and a triple substitution livened things up, but in truth Truro always looked more likely to score a third than we did in our attempts to get back in the game. Can’t argue with 3-1 overall.

A couple of thoughts:

1) Truro’s new stadium was well thought out. They are developing it in phases and it was interesting to see the modular-type standing terraces and seating areas. If we had the money …..

2) the gaffer looked downbeat at the end and I suspect he will make some changes. We have to sort the back 4 first and stop leaking goals. For me, Alex Solomon did enough when he came on for Bernie in the second half to merit a start on Monday. I’d pair Nembhard with Solomon as CBs, move Bernie to LB and start with Oyenuga at RB (I doubt Mickey P will be fit for Monday). I think Billy Leonard is far more of a threat when on the right, he didn’t look comfortable in the centre midfield role against Truro. We look short up front but I think the defence needs to be sorted first.

3) Scott Thomas was our best player yesterday. I hope he can cope with 2 games in 3 days, we need his leadership qualities right now.

4) our results at home will determine how we go this season. And we’re not the only ones on a poor run. There are 4 teams below us who haven’t had a win in the 4 games so far, and 3 teams just above us with a win and a draw. It’s early days, a win and/or clean sheet will give us something to build on.

On to Hemel at home tomorrow.

Agreed re Scott Thomas - he added a degree of composure. We didn't use the wings enough (or at all really until the end of the second half), which meant that we found ourselves pumping the ball forward down the middle to our lone striker with the ball invariably being given away. Its a shame Sam Higgins went to Hashtag, because given the way that we are playing, he would've been perfect for us. I agree that Alex Solomon deserves a try in the centre of defence.

All of the teams we have faced so far seem to know what it is they can do well and works for them. We're very much at the 'finding ourselves' stage. I have everything crossed that Gavin can solve the puzzle sooner rather than later.
