Town v Slough

Recommended Posts

I'm also going 2-1 to Town -  more clinical than Saturday but Slough are a tougher opponent who should score ... need the fans in strong voice again ... can't wait!

Betvictor have Slough as clear faves - 11/10 to win with 19/10 for us .. but what do they know!

Its the hope that kills you. You could highlight the terrible defensive lapses at the end of the first half and berate the back line, but that would be doing a disservice to Slough who were very very good. The pressure, tempo and organisation of Slough was too much for us tonight. You might argue that our errors allowed their confidence to grow. At this level our players really need to produce 9/10 performances all round if we are to hold our own. Drop off and we will be put to the sword. I'd imagine Gavin will be very disappointed. He prides himself on coaching teams that are hard to beat. We were anything but that. So, work for the management team to do.

On the plus side: a great strike by Bernie.

On to Truro!

The management team certainly do have a job on their hands. Over half the team are new and it'll take time to get them to play together and function as a unit. Well have to weather the storm till then.

We got hammered by lower league Cray Valley last season and they turned it around after that, so all to play for.

The midfield were pretty non-existent today. The press on our defence meant that we played long ball after long ball which were dealt with pretty comfortably (for the most part) by the very good Slough centre-halves.

The differences between this year and last year are that we're not going to find ourselves up against a piss-poor cheshunt team next up. Plus we've not got a 30-goal striker to do the business.

I'm assuming Gavin won't be too reactionary. Afterall, cut out the terrible final-man defending before half-time and we could have been going in 1-1 (- just get rid of the ball when facing your own goal with a forward bearing down on you!!). I can't imagine that we will defend that badly again any time soon.

Starting with just Kasimu up front (albeit with Sam Youngs in a more advanced position than normal) meant Slough were on the front foot from the word go. Fair play to them for playing 2 up front from the off, you don't see that often away from home.

Their pacy front line is what did for us. They looked really good, leaving Micky P, Joe P and Bernie for dead on several occasions bursting down both wings and putting well-directed crosses along the ground between our back-running defenders and Rhys. The first of those came after just a couple of minutes, so 0-1 down early. Slough played the ball around and looked comfortable until Kasimu bravely went for, and reached, a through ball only to be absolutely clattered by the GK. He did well to continue after that. Slough continued to threaten but out of the blue Bernie hit a stunning volleyed equaliser, one to look for when the video highlights are out. That seemed to knock Slough a little out of their stride and we started to get back into the game. But a disastrous couple of minutes before half-time ended the game as a contest. Slough had gone 1-2 up after more poor defending but half time wasn't far away. Even then I thought we were still in the game. But to give away 2 more goals before half-time was criminal. To be fair, the warning signs had been flashing all half. The management team won't be happy - we really didn't defend well. 1-4 down at half time meant the second half was damage limitation. We changed things at half time, putting Folivi on to go 2 up front, but it was too late. Another goal from a cross after they got down our line made it 1-5, and yet another rinse and repeat goal in the last minute made it 1-6.

Scraping around for positives - well Leshabela and Leonard have certainly added quality and deserve to be in the starting 11. Oyenuga looked solid when he came on at RB and played some good passes on the ground up the right. Not much else other than Slough looked pretty good. If their front line continues to play like they did against us, they will trouble plenty of other teams too.

I don't think we'll beat many in this league by playing long ball. We should trust our instincts, go back to our passing game and see how that goes. Need to write this one off completely and look ahead to Truro (A) and Hemel (H). Let's see how we look after those two. We knew it was a big jump to Conference South!!
