Groundhopper Chris White was at the Recreation Ground yesterday evening:

'Around The Ground. Hi, my name is Chris and I'm a lover of Non-league football. I love to look around grounds and thought that making a short video on my travels would interest fellow hoppers and hopefully encourage them to visit each venue. Any feedback is appreciated. Enjoy!

Wednesday 21 August
Premier Division
London Lions 3 Crawley Green 0

A groundhopper from another Forum was in attendance at Rowley Lane:

London Lions 3 v 0 Crawley Green - South Midlands League Premier Division
Programme - Online so more work for HP to print off - Admission £5.00 (c) - Att. 42 as per Full Time, approximately double that watching.

A contest not even remotely featuring on the radar at the start of Wednesday but a decent if rather one sided match between a relatively competent London Lions team and a Crawley Green team who on the basis of this performance will obviously struggle in an evening that they will surely want to forget very quickly.
Obtaining the two line ups was far easier than expected with a quick photo taken of the home team sheet and the visitors team displayed on their Twi/X feed half an hour before the 20.00 kick off, though the ease of viewing the numbers for the visitors was not matched by the faded grey on dark blue shirts that were present on the London Lions shirts. The first occasion of largely indecipherable numbers from a distance seen this season, I am sure it will not be the last.
Good start from the hosts in a first half that they dominated, taking the lead with a swift build up down the left, which led to Austin Lipman's pass inside to Max Jackson whose shot although not the best strike of the evening took an obvious deflection completely wrong footing Sam Galatis in the Crawley Green goal.
The evening which had not started well for the visitors with Keenan Coleman being cautioned for a rash challenge in the first few seconds, continued to go downhill as Paolo Deritis twisted his knee at the time when the hosts took the lead and it took some minutes for him to be firstly moved off of the pitch and then several more minutes before he could be slowly be assisted into the stand with a large icepack strapped to his knee.
Proceedings deteriorated further for the visitors when after a series of intricate passes Shack teed up Zack Jackson whose arrowed finish wide of the on rushing Galatis was worthy of a much bigger audience and the nadir of Crawley Green's first half was completed with Jackson scoring his second from what looked like a suspiciously offside position. The hosts fortunate that possession had been maintained after Shack's self indulgent run on goal led to him scuffing his final shot. The ladies supporting the visitors in front were not very pleased almost certainly with good reason about the lack of a flag.
The second half would have benefitted from an early goal from Crawley Green to give them the confidence required, but it never looked likely to materialise and although the second period passed relatively swiftly it was a dull watch with the eight substitutions (five for London Lions) making precisely no difference apart from giving players a few minutes on the pitch. One notable chance for the hosts to add to their tally, however Austin Lipman inextricably angled wide a clear chance from close range. For all their efforts, Crawley Green deserved a consolation but their final effort of what was a very long evening for them in the form of a tired wild slice from Dan Trif which ended up in a neighbouring field summed up their dejected and deflated performance.
Rowley Lane was one of those out of the way venues that when first visited in February 2023 was thought of as being visited once and never again to be on the agenda, but a return visit was made. No changes to what is in effect a private sports ground with an opulent club house since the previous visit, there is a sizeable and comfortable stand but no other covered accommodation. Venue despite situated in a London borough is surprisingly rural beyond the multi million pound residences of Arkley.
Noted when planning the return journey that with the North London line being subject to engineering works, it was not possible to avoid Zone 1 unless there was a convenient bus back to Barnet which with a later than anticipated finish at 22.01 was impossible to reach. Therefore, it was a rare midweek journey through central London with the bonus that the 23.48 departure to Grays was slightly delayed thus allowing it to be intercepted at Stratford (late evening c2c engineering works as well). Indoors just before the end of the first half hour of Thursday.
