London FA Senior Cup Second Round
Cockfosters Colney Heath 0

A comprehensive match report from Cockfosters:

Match Report – Saturday 12th October 2024
London Senior Cup – 2nd Round.
Cockfosters (3) 4 (Grantham 21 mins, Ugbomah 39, Goulandris 44 (pen), Rookard 64) Colney Heath (0) 0
Cockfosters eased their way through to the third round of the London Senior Cup, and a trip to Step 3 side Hanwell Town, with a commanding victory over local rivals Colney Heath.
Three first half goals effectively ended the tie at the halfway point – and it was somewhat of a surprise that only one further goal was added to the tally in the second half.
The first twenty minutes however were pretty even as both sides tried to impose themselves on the other in a typical ‘cup tie’ fashion.
Indeed, it only took fifteen seconds for referee Cowell to brandish the first yellow cards of the afternoon when Heath defender Jed Ejjayha decided to hold onto Ethan Rookard’s shirt as the striker attempted to go round him.
Yianni Goulandris also went into the book for suggesting to the referee that he show a yellow card to Ejjayha.
Rookard came close with a header in the 3rd minute, following a Josh Grantham corner, and it needed two saves inside sixty seconds from Charlie Patmore to keep the scores level, denying Joseph Caffery with his feet then catching Mayer Hajousman’s shot in the 17th minute. It turned out to be his only real work of the afternoon.
Cockfosters then took the game by the scruff of the neck.
In the 21st minute, the home side began a move from the back up the right flank. Whilst Cory Ugbomah’s ball into the box was headed out by Sankou Jabbi, Grantham was first to react, collecting the loose ball, then working it from left to right foot before unleashing an absolute piledriver from 25 yards that simply flew into the back of the net, past the outstretched arm of Connor Sansom.
It was a peach of a strike.
Cockfosters were now settling nicely into their rhythm, with Goulandris and Ryan Hayes looking particularly lively and with Ugbomah continuing to make inroads up the right side. It wasn’t too long before a second goal arrived.
In the 39th minute, another move starting from back saw the ball played up to Rookard, who nodded towards Goulandris. The winger’s first-time ball found Ugbomah, who held off two defenders before coolly slotting the ball beneath the advancing Sansom from the edge of the box.
Goulandris himself created and scored the third goal himself just four minutes later. Collecting a ball from skipper Adam Hastings on the left, he charged at right-back Jabbi, sped past him before being tripped by the Heath defender as he made his way into the penalty area.
Goulandris took the spot kick himself and, although Sansom guessed correctly, the shot was too firm and too well directed.
Despite Heath making several changes at the break, including sending on a new left back, it didn’t stop Ugbomah creating his usual brand of mayhem.
In the 53rd minute, he blitzed past his new man and squared for Rookard to hook over. Two minutes later, having picked up Rookard’s flick on from Luke Foster’s free kick, he beat his man again and pulled the ball back - but this time Hayes hit the angle of post and crossbar with his curling effort.
Heath’s cause wasn’t helped in the 57th minute when Ejjayha picked up his second yellow card for another foul on Rookard.
In the 64th minute it was 4-0 – and Ugbomah would be at the heart of things again.
JJ Cruz’s perfectly weighted ball forward with the outside of his left foot found Ugbomah in the midst of two defenders and an advancing Sansom. He then managed to wriggle his way around all three before squaring for Rookard to score from close range.
The onslaught continued as Cockfosters found more time and space, helped by the numerical advantage. Grantham and Malik Nosike controlled matters with the former creating the first of two chances for Goulandris in the space of three minutes.
Unfortunately, both efforts, when the Cockfosters wide man cut in from the left and shot with his right foot, were off target.
Cruz was also just off target with two attempts, heading over successive corners from Grantham in the 73rd and 78th minutes.
The home side should have had a second penalty kick in the 86th minute when a speeding Luca Gordon was just too quick for Jamie Willing and was tripped.
However, referee Cowell said no, maybe taking pity on the under-fire visitors.
With just a few minutes added on, the referee brought an impressive Cockfosters performance to an end.
Cockfosters: Patmore, Nobrega, Foster, Hayes, Hastings (capt), Cruz, Ugbomah, Nosike, Rookard, Grantham, Goulandris.
Subs: Gordon (for Hayes) 68 mins, Lutaaya (for Rookard) 75 mins, Reid (for Nosike) and Michael (for Ugbomah) both 86 mins.
Yellow Cards: Goulandris (Ungentlemanly conduct – not specified) 1 min, Nosike (Timewasting) 84 mins.
