I believe in the 80’s Winslow went to Baldock and beat them there the season the Baldock won the league. They were getting huge attendances back then.

Headed up to Hertfordshire to find a patch of grass to get my 2024/25 season started. A 2 hour 40 minute drive served to remind me of the stress engendered when the trip involves the western section of the M25. Arrived at a very tidy looking ground at around 14:20 – enough time to take a few pics and grab a tasty cheeseburger (£4). One side of the ground is out of bounds to spectators but, fortunately, it isn’t one of those grounds where the side in use is facing into the sun.
Admission: £8 - concessions for the older generation kick in at 65, so no reduction for me today.
Programme: Online
As is the way with opening day fixtures, I had no idea what to expect. Wormley are playing at step 5 for the first time, having been promoted last season and moved across from the Eastern Counties League. While Crawley Green finished 17th in the SSML Premier last season. It turned out to be a very even contest, if not the most entertaining. The hosts took the lead midway through the first half, with a well taken strike from their #11, but just two minutes later, a misplaced pass by the Wormley ‘keeper presented the Crawley Green #9 with an easy leveller. And that was the scoring completed.

I was originally planning to have a day on the train but due to the line shut between Warwick and Bicester I decided to drive and visit a ground that I had been to many years ago but this time on the right pitch. My previous visit was for a Herts Charity Cup pre-season match but the game got switched to the adjacent 3G pitch so I finally got round to ticking the correct pitch for this match.
A surprisingly quiet M1 (going southwards) saw me have plenty of time for a pre-match visit to the GBG listed Three Hammers in Chiswell Green where the Dark Star Hophead was very drinkable. On to the Maccabi London Sports Ground which is situated on Rowley Lane between High Barnet and Boreham Wood. It's a very pleasant ground with the pitch looking immaculate. There is a large seated stand with access to both goals. he side where the dugouts are is inaccessible.
London Lions were the better team from the start and took the lead after 14 minutes. They could and should have scored more in the first half. They eventually got a second goal on 68 minutes to complete a comfortable win against a poor Potton United team.
