Getting a loan keeper from a pro club who is good enough is like looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack as we found out last season.

Ideally we need a keeper who we know is proven at this level or above.

I agree with you Reading Rebel on the loan keeper situation with a pro club. That experiment turned out to be a minefield despite Will Dennis being a good signing.

Where I don't quite agree with you is when you say 'we need a keeper who we know is proven at this level or above', I believe it is possible to recruit a goalkeeper from 1 or 2 steps/levels below who is experienced in the non-league scene and rated as one of the best in their current division. It is just a case of cherry picking/recognising who they are.

For me a goalkeeper needs to be a ever present in the team, who brings an air of authority to this role but is well liked and respected by his fellow semi-pro's and is well known on the circuit .Probably around 27/28/29 age group.A goalie who wants to be at Slough for a few seasons. Not looking to be headhunted for teams paying more.

Now that we have lost the services of Temi Eweka in the heart of defence, it is vital Slough sign wisely in terms of a goalkeeper. I would prefer a keeper who is around the 6ft mark and is communicative and has a good all round game.

It's always been possible to pick up a good player from the levels below, whether that's a keeper or an outfield player if you have the right contacts or scouting system in place to look for them.

I'm sure this way of finding talent is still effective but made less so with players using agents to progress their career.

A keeper who is 6ft+, commanding, ever present, respected, well liked and well known on the circuit sounds ideal and the sort of keeper umpteen clubs are looking for.

A keeper who wants to be at Slough for a few seasons, not looking to be headhunted for more money I'm afraid is impossible to know when signing a player.

When I said a keeper who wants to play for Slough and not be overly ambitious for money I was thinking about players who've been regulars in Step 3/Step 4 who seem to have been overlooked for various reasons.  A few years ago I could have named several fitting that description but as I've not been attending games much I have to say I'm out of kilter with who is around the non-league scene these days and who would fit the criteria.

My point, though, was that you don't have to bring in an ex professional/ or someone from the National Premier, NLS or NLN to find a good goalkeeper that would serve Slough well. As an example I thought Simon Grant who played for Marlow,Bracknell and is currently at Basingstoke, who played one or two games for Slough on loan from Marlow was a very promising goalkeeper back in the day.He had character and was a good shot stopper and should/could have played higher but for whatever reason never did. I'm not saying he's the man we want as he's probably getting on a bit now and I suppose his best is behind him but I bet there's a few others around that would love a chance to play in the NLS for Slough.

If we did sign a keeper from step 3/4 how would we know they won't chase the money if they did well and a bigger offer came in for them?

Players say one thing to appease a club and when presented with the £££ signs in general will jump ship without a seconds thought.
