Over the years teams in the lower places of the play-offs tend to do better than the teams that finish higher up.

Could be to do with momentum.

95% to do with momentum IMO RR. Most of the time those lower teams have had to push for a few weeks to grab those last spots and have almost been in playoff "mode" for that time. They then rock up to play teams that have been in the position for a while, perhaps resting players leading up to it to ensure there are no knocks etc as well as playing games that matter a lot less overall.

Just happens too many times for it not to be a big factor in the deciding end of the season,
