On the anniversary of my son's death, as I have done every year (except for during lockdown), I travelled down to London in the morning to visit his grave. I'd pretty much narrowed down my options on my return journey to Barton Rovers or Dunstable. When I spotted that this was a pay what you want fixture, I chose this one, as I feel that such initiatives deserve to be supported. Though I offered to pay the normal price, a lack of change - both on my part and the club's - meant we agreed on a tenner for admission and programme, saving myself a pound on the usual price.
Naturally, my choice of game guaranteed that there would be goals aplenty at Barton, with Rovers winning 5-2. By contrast, eight miles to the south-west, it looked like we might get none at all.
Not that it was a bad game by any means. I've seen a lot worse this season, and there was plenty of decent stuff played, but there were few clear cut chances. The closest either side came to scoring in the opening 45 minutes was a header from the Dunstable right back which struck the crossbar in first half stoppage time.
The second half followed a similar pattern, pretty even all across the pitch, with Harpenden probably just shading the possession and territory stats, but very little in it.
The only goal was reported by both Dunstable's twitter and the matchday announcer as having been scored on 72 minutes. I made it a little over 83 minutes! A corner from the Harpenden left brushed off the head of a defender and nestled into the far corner.
This win moved Harpenden, already guaranteed a play-off place, and with no hope of automatic promotion, up to third, though Leverstock Green, immediately below them, have a game in hand. Dunstable will almost certainly finish somewhere between 12th and 14th.
