Slough v Bath

Recommended Posts

I would usually agree, and I can see the score being 1-1 with 25 minutes left.

But with us needing wins to close the gap, I think we will go for it, and we have the attacking options to find a late winner.

2-1

With us being 4 points off 7th now, today is a must win if we’re serious about going for the play offs. I hope we can attract a crowd near to 1,000 and Bath should bring at least 100 as they average nearly 1,500 and it’s a relatively easy journey to us. I wonder if Scott will look to add one or two players to the squad with the transfer deadline being sometime this month?

Interesting thought….. transfer cut-off looks to be 5pm on 28th March, when 5 league matches remain.

If it looked like 10 points would be enough from those last 5 matches to make the play-offs then what would be the cost of two big signings for a month compared to the proceeds from a play-off match (that would probably attract a crowd of 2,500)?

On the game itself.

I think it's well known that Bath like to get down the wings and put a lot of crosses into the area, so stopping the crosses into our box and defending crosses will be crucial for us in the game.

Should be a game where both teams will be going for it so plenty of goals and a possible 2-2 or 3-2.

That just brought back memories of the 2018/9 season…… we were miles off the play-offs in mid-Feb when we signed Billy Clifford.

We went on a run of 5 wins 5 draws & 1 defeat, and only missed the play-offs because we drew our last two matches… conceding a 94th minute equaliser in one & a 95th minute equaliser in the other.

Hopefully the end of this season will be as exciting as that one was.

I just don’t get why the ref wasn’t prepared to wait for the ambulance to arrive? With Wexham Park hospital just 5 mins away you’d hope help wouldn’t have been far away. Once the medics have taken over, quick warm up and finish the match. Sounds like there was a great crowd so why ruin it for them with this decision? I so hope justice prevails and the rearranged match starts where it left off but let’s be realistic it’s not likely is it!!!

Too many precedents this season already. Quite a few abandoned games all around the country due to emergency in the crowd. All been replayed in entirety. Not there so can't comment too much, but fine margins involved.

Wexham Park might be 5 minutes away but the ambulance did not arrive before the ref abandoned the game

When walking out the ground I spoke to a Bath City player who was by the Bath fans behind the goal and he said the ref abandoned the game for "player welfare" reasons. The Bath player said the ref was concerned that the players might get injuries having been off the pitch for a while.

Don't know if that is true or not but that is what he said to me.

The poor chap was made comfortable and moved  after about 25 mins to the medical room as no sign of an ambulance this side of Christmas !  Ref had taken the players off so there had to be agreement from both sides to return . Apparently Bath did not want to continue . Wonder why ?
ref had no choice but to abandon even though only about 20mins left to play .

And a Bath City fan on their forum saying he's heard rumours that Bath refused to continue the game.

Surely that can't be right?

Both sets of players were happy to continue but Gerry Gill wasn’t!

Bloody cut backs… maybe the ref was told the ambulance was going to be an hour and that’s his reason? Hopefully we’ll get an official statement confirming.

If so, as an athletics coach I have prepared athletes to perform (at higher levels than national league south) for heats, then again after an hour or so for semis, then again for finals. With proper warm-up and recovery work this is perfectly possible.

Have these things always meant match abandonments? I've been following the Rebels since 1999 and in nearly 25 years I can only recall this sort of thing happening during a Slough match once before, and as I recall the match didn't even stop.

But medical emergency or not, timing is no guarantee that a result will stand. Scunthorpe vs Buxton earlier this season in the NL North was abandoned due to torrential rain in the 95th minute, yet replayed in it's entirety.

This is what we were told by someone who was (presumably) in the know. Often the referee's hand's are tied in these circumstances. I'm just staggered that he's done this when his team had just scored 2 goals and were in the ascendency. With 20 minutes left to play, they could have got something. Yet they now have to come back to Arbour Park in midweek for the replayed game! Total lunacy, and cynical beyond belief.
